My First Pregnancy Journey: The Name We Have Chosen for Our Baby

Daily Short Blog #17

Choosing a name for our first baby was truly exciting! We actually didn’t have any problems on choosing one as I and my husband agreed on it right away. We didn’t announce our baby’s name until after I gave birth, thus, the excitement of both of our families to know and meet her.

What are our conditions for a baby’s name?

  1. It should only contain ONE word. So that when she grew up in time to take up her exams, she will not need to write down a 2-word or 3-word name excluding her last name. I can’t imagine how she will endure writing a long name especially when she will start learning to write her name for the very first time. Though, there’s nothing wrong with naming your child with 2 or more words. We have different opinions. 🙂
  2. It should be easy to pronounce as both an English and Filipino name. Considering our current residence is in Dubai and our home country is in the Philippines, we want everybody to feel comfortable calling her name.

And that’s it!

When did we start formulating our baby’s names?

Honestly? Right from the day we found out that we are going to have a baby! We were so thrilled so we started to think about different names even if we don’t have any idea whether it’s going to be a boy or a girl. It was very overwhelming yet quite amusing to have a list of all those possible names for our baby. All of them are so cute!

What names are on top of our list?

If it’s a girl, we are going to name her Rebecca, while if it’s a boy, it will be Elijah.

What name have we finally chosen?

After doing our 20th week scan, we have finally found out the gender of our upcoming baby. And, it’s gonna be a girl! Thus, we shall name her Rebecca. ❤️

What does ‘Rebecca‘ mean on different aspects?

As a Personality

Rebecca is a name that implies a pioneering spirit, a natural born leader, highly focused, and achievement oriented. One who is enduring hardship to try out new things and one who becomes frustrated to do too many unimportant activities.

As a Biblical Name

The name also has a biblical connection and features in the Old Testament. Rebecca was the wife of Isaac and the mother of Esau and Jacob.

As one of the most important women in the Bible, Rebecca means “to bind” or “to snare” in Hebrew, a fitting description since she tricked her elderly husband, Isaac, into choosing their younger son, Jacob, and not their older son, Esau, to lead the future tribes of Israel.

As a Latin Word

The Vulgate (Latin) form of biblical Rebekah, from Hebrew רִבְקָה‎ (Rivka) is “enchantingly beautiful, captivating, snare”.

As a Greek Word

The name Rebecca is of Hebrew origin, meaning “to tie” or “bind.” It derives from the Hebrew name Rivkah, which originates from the verb ribbqah, meaning “join,” “tie,” or “snare.”

Why exactly we have chosen ‘Rebecca‘ as our baby’s name?

Rebecca is such a perfect and wonderful name. It captured both our hearts on how sweet it sounds calling our baby such a name.

But the real reason why we came up to this name was because I and my husband love to watch The Vampire Diaries before. It all started with this American TV Series where the main characters were Ian Somerhalder as Damon Salvatore, Paul Wesley as Stefan Salvatore and Nina Dobrev as Elena Gilberts.

One of the secondary characters name was Rebekah Mikaelson as played by Claire Holt. According to the story line, when Rebekah revealed that she was also a vampire, things developed quickly between her and Stefan. It is implied that they were truly in love at one point.

While watching the series, me and my husband both agreed to each other that whenever we will have a baby girl, we will consider naming her as Rebecca, though the spelling is quite different, we think that Rebecca is more commonly used than Rebekah. The Vampire Diaries truly influenced our decision when choosing our baby’s name. 🙂

By the way, our choice for a baby boy’s name which was Elijah as mentioned above was also a character in the said series. 🙂

What nickname should we call her?

Most Rebeccas tend to be known as Becci or Becca. Some other cute nicknames include Becks, Bec, Beck, Bex, Becs, Reba, Riva, Rebby, Reb, Becka, Bekah. But most likely, we will call her Becca in short. Though I know that even if we will always call her Rebecca or Becca, chances are our relatives and future friends will shorten her name.

What or how ever people will call her, she will always be our one and only Rebecca. It is a very beautiful name. She will grow up kind, lovely and sweet just as her name. ❤️❤️
