How well are we able to distinguish a fake and a genuine person? May it be a friend, a lover, or any stranger. How can you tell if a person is genuinely being nice to you or just taking advantage of you?
It is indeed important to know whether a person is being dishonest to you to avoid getting hurt and deceived; especially those persons who pretend to be trustworthy, but in reality, is somebody who just uses you to further their own selfish goals. Though there are some fake people who will not cause you serious harm, there are some who could destroy your reputation, your family, your business or even your entire life.
Authenticity is at the heart of success.
To help you tell the difference between the two, here are some tips to distinguish fake and genuine people that you should be aware of:
1. Genuine people are usually not desperate to impress others.
They are usually comfortable for what they are and what they have. While fake people thrive on attention of those around them because they find it necessary to prove themselves in the society.
2. Genuine people will want to make you happy.
These people will casually text, call or start a random conversation with you just to check if you are doing well. On the other hand, fake ones will only think of how they can be happy by using you.
Accept no one’s definition of your life, define yourself.
3. Genuine people are always kind and considerate.
They are also responsive and very respectful to everyone they come across. While fake people are only nice when they need something especially to those who can be useful to them.
4. Genuine people are honest.
They will tell you the truth about matters that are important to you even if you might get hurt and offended. They will directly say it to your face. Fake people will either tell you something you wanted to hear or something to make you feel bad with an ugly lie. Sometimes, they will wait until you walk away to say it; they will be your best friend when you are with them and your enemy when you are not.
Fake friends are around you when they think you are cool. True friends are around you even when they think you are a fool.
5. Genuine will celebrate your success and rejoice whenever you accomplish anything.
They support you on your journey of success. While fake people will resent you for it as they feel crushed when you achieve your goals. They envy you and feel bitter about it; they would also want to pull you down to discredit your achievements.
6. Genuine people don’t boast about their accomplishments.
They are humble and they don’t try to attract as much attention to themselves as possible. Fake people usually do the opposite, they brag about themselves and their accomplishment, even the small ones.
7. Genuine people are generally kind to everyone.
They feel compassion towards you when you are at your lowest. They understand your pain, worry about you and will cheer you up when life sucks. On the other hand, fake ones are only there when they only need you as they cherish when you experience failure and sadness. They actually take your defeat as their own victory.
Some friends are like pennies, two-faced and worthless.
8. Genuine people care about purpose and meaning.
They know that love is; kindness, trust and faithfulness are the most important things in life. While fake people, are materialistic, they only care about their material possessions such as money, food, jewellery and physical appearance.
9. Genuine people will always hear you out.
They will attentively listen to your problems and give you guidance on how you could be more efficient on solving life challenges, while a fake person will only pretend to listen especially if it’s something bad about you for them to gossip with other people.
Don’t tell me what they say about me. Tell me why they feel comfortable telling you.

Always choose to spend your life around genuine people – a true lover, a true friend or any other companions in your life. It is better to be wise than be sorry forever.
