Crochet Baby Blanket Free Pattern: ‘Virus Blanket’

Hello there my fellow crochet lovers! I have been yearning to make a blanket using the virus blanket pattern ever since, because aside from its unique design, the result of mixing colored yarns or just using the gradient ones looks really magnificent and eye-catching. This was my the first virus blanket I have made and I have gifted it to my colleague who was giving birth to a baby girl.

I have written the whole pattern on this blog and I’m hoping you’ll like it. The pattern itself is actually repetitive, you’ll be able to memorize it right after the 7th Row! You can even do it with eyes closed. 🙂

CH – chain
DC – double crochet
SL ST – slip stitch
ST / st – stitch
** ** repeat this pattern to complete the row
^^** **^^ repeat the series of patterns to complete the row

Materials Used:

1. Cicibebe Cake 100 g – since this blanket is for a newborn, 1 cake is enough
2. 4.0 mm Crochet Hook
3. A pair of scissors
4. A tapestry needle
5. A stitch marker
6. Your own customized handmade labels or handmade buttons (optional)

Start

Start with a slip knot, CH – 6, sl st on 1st chain to create a ring

Row 1:
CH – 3, DC – 19, sl st to the top of 1st DC
Total: 20 DCs

Row 2:
CH – 3, make DC – 2 on each st from Row 1, sl st
Total: 40 DCs

Row 3:
CH – 3, **CH – 1, DC on the next stitch, CH – 1, DC on the next stitch** (repeat this pattern to complete the row),
sl st on the 1st CH – 3

Row 4:
CH – 5, skip 1st CH – 1 space below (this will be the first-half part of 1st corner of the blanket),
**SC – 1 on next CH – 1 space below, CH – 3, skip next CH – 1 space)** (repeat this pattern for 3 times),

**CH – 5, skip 1 space, SC – 1** (repeat this pattern for 2 times) (this will be the 2nd corner of the blanket),
**CH – 3, skip a space, SC** (repeat this pattern for 3 times),

**CH – 5, skip 1 space, SC – 1** (repeat this pattern for 2 times) (this will be the 3rd corner of the blanket),
**CH – 3, skip a space, SC** (repeat this pattern for 3 times),

**CH – 5, skip 1 space, SC – 1** (repeat this pattern for 2 times) (this will be the 4th corner of the blanket),
**CH – 3, skip a space, SC** (repeat this pattern for 3 times),

**CH – 5, skip 1 space, SC – 1** (repeat this pattern for 2 times) (this will be the second-half part of 1st corner of the blanket),
SC on the last space before the 1st CH – 3

Row 5:
sl st on the 1st Big space (it is the CH – 5 from the previous row), CH – 3, DC – 9 on the same 1st space,

**SC -1 onto the next Small space below (it is the CH – 3 from the previous row), then CH – 3,
SC – 1 onto the next Small space below, then CH – 3, then SC – 1 on the last small space,
DC – 10 on the next Big space, again DC – 10 on the next Big Space**
(repeat this pattern to finish the row)

then sl st in the 3rd chain of your CH – 3 from the beginning of the row

Row 6:
CH – 3, DC – 1 on each 9 DCs from the previous row,

**SC on 1st Small space, then CH – 3, SC on the next Small space,
DC – 1 on each 20 DCs from the previous row**
(repeat this patter to finish the row)

then sl st in the 3rd chain of your CH – 3 from the beginning of the row

Row 7: (same like Row 3)
CH – 3, **CH – 1, DC – 1 on the next stitch** (repeat this pattern 10 times),

then instead of Chaining -1 at the end of 10th DC, just skip Small space below,

^^**DC – 1 on the next DC below, CH – 1** Repeat this for 20 times**, then skip the Small space below^^
(^^repeat this pattern until the end of the row^^)

then sl st in the 3rd chain of your CH – 3 from the beginning of the row

Row 8: (same like Row 4)

CH – 5, skip CH – 1 below (first-half of the 1st corner)

SC – 1, CH – 3, skip next CH – 1 space below,
SC – 1 on the next space, CH – 3, skip next CH – 1 space below,
SC – 1 on the next space, CH – 3, skip next CH – 1 space below, then SC – 1 on the last space,

CH – 5, skip 2 CH – 1 space below, SC on the 3rd CH – 1 space, (2nd corner)
CH – 5, skip 2 CH – 1 space below, SC on the 3rd CH – 1 space,
CH – 3, skip the next space, SC – 1 on the next space,
CH – 3, skip the next space, SC – 1 on the next space,
CH – 3, skip the next space, SC – 1 on the next space,

CH – 5, skip 2 CH – 1 space below, SC on the 3rd CH – 1 space, (3rd corner)
CH – 5, skip 2 CH – 1 space below, SC on the 3rd CH – 1 space,
CH – 3, skip the next space, SC – 1 on the next space,
CH – 3, skip the next space, SC – 1 on the next space,
CH – 3, skip the next space, SC – 1 on the next space,

CH – 5, skip 2 CH – 1 space below, SC on the 3rd CH – 1 space, (4th corner)
CH – 5, skip 2 CH – 1 space below, SC on the 3rd CH – 1 space,
CH – 3, skip the next space, SC – 1 on the next space,
CH – 3, skip the next space, SC – 1 on the next space,
CH – 3, skip the next space, SC – 1 on the next space,

CH – 5, skip 2 CH – 1 space below, (second-half of the 1st corner)
sl st on the very 1st chain of the row

Row 9: (same like Row 5)
sl st into the next Big space (or the CH – 5 space from the previous row), CH – 3, DC – 9,
SC – 1 on the Small space below (or the CH – 3 space from the previous row), then CH – 3,
SC – 1 on the Small space below, CH – 3, then SC – 1,
DC – 10 on the Big space, DC – 10 on the next Big space,
SC – 1 on the Small space below, then CH – 3,

Row 10: (same like Row 5)
sl st into the next Big space (or the CH – 5 space from the previous row), CH – 3, DC – 9,
SC – 1 on the Small space below (or the CH – 3 space from the previous row), then CH – 3,
SC – 1 on the next Small space below, CH – 3
SC – 1 on the next Small space below, CH – 3, then SC – 1,

**DC – 10 on the Big space, DC – 10 on the next Big space,

Row 11: (same like Row 6)
CH – 3, DC – 1 on each of the DCs from the previous row,

SC – 1 on the next Small space below, CH – 3, then SC – 1
DC – 1 on each of the DCs from the previous row (total of 20 DCs per group of DCs)**
(repeat this pattern to complete the row)

sl st on top of the first CH – 3

Row 12:
Keep on repeating the same pattern starting from Row 3 to Row 7 until your yarn ball or yarn cake is finished or until desired size.

You may finish your work by cutting the yarn and weaving the ends. YOu might want to weave a long end of yarn since this is a blanket and will be used for long time. 🙂

Since I gifted this blanket for a newborn, 1 yarn cake was enough. You may continue the doing the pattern as many rows as you like. You may also use plain-colored yarns and switch colors ever other 5 rows. For sure, it would turn out really cute too!
