Daily Short Blog #4
Being a good person isn’t always easy, but becoming a better person is a choice we can make every day.
Sometimes, I find myself wondering, “Am I a good person?” Or, perhaps more honestly, “Am I a good person despite all the mistakes I’ve made in my life?”
I have made mistakes, and there are things in my past that I regret. I’ve asked for forgiveness, learned from those experiences, and promised myself that I would try not to repeat the same mistakes. I believe that acknowledging our wrongdoings is an important part of becoming a better version of ourselves.
More than anything, I think most of us want to become better people while making choices that are consistent with our values and beliefs. No matter where you are in life, you always have the opportunity to change, grow, and become a little better than you were yesterday.
Being a better person doesn’t mean being perfect. It means being willing to learn, take responsibility, show kindness, and make better choices, even when nobody is watching.
So, here are 17 simple ways you can become a better version of yourself.
1. Love and accept yourself
Before you can genuinely improve yourself, you need to learn to accept who you are, including your strengths, weaknesses, mistakes, and imperfections.
Self-acceptance doesn’t mean ignoring your flaws or refusing to change. Rather, it means recognizing that you are still worthy of love and respect while working on yourself.
When you constantly carry negativity, anger, or resentment toward yourself, it can affect the way you treat other people. Learning to be kinder to yourself can also help you become more compassionate toward others.
2. Don’t make excuses
If you say you’re going to do something, try your best to follow through.
Keep your word and take responsibility for your commitments. If you tell someone you’re going to do something and then repeatedly fail to do it, you may eventually lose their trust.
I know it’s not always easy to keep every promise, especially when circumstances change. That’s why it’s better to avoid making commitments you know you cannot realistically keep.
Being dependable is one of the simplest ways to show respect for other people.
3. Have empathy for others
The world doesn’t revolve around you, me, or anyone else.
Everyone has their own struggles, experiences, beliefs, and reasons for seeing life differently. You may not always agree with another person’s opinion, but that doesn’t mean you have to disrespect them.
Try to put yourself in someone else’s shoes before judging them. Empathy can help you understand people better and build healthier relationships.
4. Call your parents regularly
Make time to check in with your parents whenever you can.
It may seem like a small thing, but calling your mom or dad simply to ask how they’re doing can mean a lot. Life can become incredibly busy, but being busy shouldn’t always be an excuse for forgetting the people who have been there for us.
Tell your parents that you love them. Tell them you miss them.
Life is short, and we never really know how much time we have with the people we love.
5. Be honest in your relationships
Be truthful and sincere in your relationships, especially the ones that are closest to your heart.
When a relationship is healthy and meaningful, nurture it. But when a relationship is no longer working, be honest with yourself and the other person.
Don’t stay in a relationship simply because you’re afraid of change or because you’re trying to force something that is no longer there.
Be honest about how you feel, communicate openly, and remain loyal to the commitments you’ve chosen to make.
6. Don’t waste other people’s time
Time is precious.
You may not be particularly conscious of time, and perhaps being late doesn’t seem like a big deal to you. But remember that other people have their own schedules, responsibilities, and priorities.
Once time is wasted, you can never get it back.
Being punctual, respecting appointments, and avoiding unnecessary delays are simple ways of showing consideration for other people.
7. Don’t blame other people for your own mistakes
Sometimes, other people really are responsible for what happens to us. However, before pointing fingers, take a moment to look at your own actions and ask yourself:
“Did I contribute to this situation in any way?”
Learning to admit when you’re wrong isn’t a sign of weakness. It’s a sign of maturity.
“Maturity is apologizing when you’re at fault, admitting your mistakes, and learning how not to make them again.”
Take responsibility for your actions, learn from your mistakes, and try to do better the next time.
8. Don’t take everything personally
This one can be particularly difficult.
There will always be people who say things we don’t like or behave in ways that hurt us. But sometimes, what people say or do has more to do with them than with us.
Their behavior may be influenced by their own experiences, frustrations, insecurities, or problems.
Instead of immediately taking everything personally, pause and ask yourself whether the situation is really about you.
This doesn’t mean tolerating disrespect or allowing people to hurt you. It simply means learning to choose which things deserve your emotional energy.
9. Know the Golden Rule
One of the simplest principles for becoming a better person is the Golden Rule:
“In everything, do to others what you would have them do to you.”
— Matthew 7:12
Treat people with the same kindness, respect, and consideration that you would want to receive.
Before saying something hurtful, think about how you would feel if someone said the same thing to you.
Put yourself in the other person’s shoes.
Sometimes, a little empathy can prevent a lot of unnecessary pain.
10. Understand the consequences of your actions
Everything we do can have consequences.
Our words, decisions, and behavior can affect not only ourselves but also the people around us.
Even simple acts of good manners can make a difference, waiting for everyone before starting a meal, holding the door open for someone, saying thank you, or helping someone who needs assistance.
Small acts of kindness may seem insignificant, but they can have a positive impact on someone else’s day.
11. Think before you speak
Words are powerful.
When we’re angry or frustrated, it’s easy to say things we don’t really mean. Unfortunately, once hurtful words have been spoken, we cannot completely take them back.
An apology can help repair a relationship, but it doesn’t erase the hurt that our words may have caused.
So before you speak, especially when you’re angry, stop, breathe, and think.
Ask yourself:
“Is it necessary?”
“Is it true?”
“Will saying this help or hurt?”
Sometimes, choosing not to say something is one of the wisest decisions you can make.
“Think twice before you speak, because your words and influence will plant the seed of either success or failure in the mind of another.”
— Napoleon Hill
12. Be generous
Being generous doesn’t mean giving away everything you have.
Generosity can be as simple as sharing what you have, helping someone in need, giving your time, or offering encouragement to someone who is struggling.
Money and material possessions are valuable, but their meaning often becomes greater when we use what we have to help others.
You don’t have to be wealthy to be generous.
13. Be positive
Life will always have both good and bad days.
Being positive doesn’t mean pretending that problems don’t exist. Instead, it means trying to look for solutions and focusing on the things you can control.
When you develop a more positive outlook, you may also begin to notice the good qualities in other people and appreciate the opportunities hidden within difficult situations.
14. Be grateful
Be grateful for the people, opportunities, and simple things you have instead of constantly focusing on what you lack.
Gratitude can change the way you see your life.
It can also make you a more pleasant person to be around because people naturally appreciate someone who recognizes and values the good things in life.
Take time to appreciate what you already have while continuing to work toward the things you hope to achieve.
15. Be consistent
It’s easy to be kind when everything is going well.
The real challenge is maintaining that kindness when you’re tired, frustrated, disappointed, or under pressure.
Try to treat people with the same respect regardless of their status or what you can gain from them.
Character is not only about how we behave when people are watching. It’s also about who we are when nobody is.
16. Compliment others when they deserve it
A sincere compliment can brighten someone’s day.
Compliment people when you genuinely appreciate something about them. It could be their hard work, kindness, appearance, creativity, or accomplishment.
Being happy for someone else’s success doesn’t diminish your own.
When your compliments are honest and genuine, they can strengthen relationships and encourage others to keep doing their best.
17. Lastly, smile
Never underestimate the power of a smile.
A smile can brighten a room, make someone feel welcome, and communicate warmth even without saying a word.
Smile when things are going well, but don’t be afraid to smile during difficult times, too.
Problems will always be part of life. We cannot prevent every difficult situation from happening, but we can choose how we respond to them.
And who knows?
Your smile might brighten someone else’s day when they need it the most.
So, How Can You Become a Better Person?
Becoming a better person doesn’t happen overnight.
It requires patience, self-awareness, consistency, and a willingness to admit that sometimes we are wrong.
You don’t have to change everything about yourself at once. Start with small things. Be more patient. Listen more. Keep your promises. Say thank you. Apologize when you’re wrong. Help someone who needs it. Be kind even when you don’t have to be.
Most importantly, don’t compare your journey with someone else’s.
Becoming a better person is not about becoming perfect. It’s about becoming more aware of who you are and making better choices every day.
When you become a better person, you may also inspire the people around you to become better themselves. A little kindness, generosity, respect, honesty, and gratitude can go a long way.
Final Thoughts
I believe that becoming a better person is a lifelong journey.
There will be days when we make the wrong choices, lose our patience, say something we shouldn’t have said, or disappoint someone we care about. That doesn’t mean we have failed completely.
What matters is that we recognize our mistakes, learn from them, ask for forgiveness when necessary, and try again.
Every morning gives us another opportunity to do better than yesterday.
So, don’t wait for the perfect moment to become a better person.
Start with one small act of kindness today.
“A better person is not someone who never makes mistakes, but someone who is willing to learn from them and become better.”
“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”
— Ephesians 4:32
You don’t need to change the whole world to make a difference.
Sometimes, becoming a little kinder, more patient, more understanding, and more grateful is already a beautiful beginning.
Keep growing. Keep learning. Keep becoming the person you want to be.

I love all these things you mention. Having a better life always start in loving yourself and just being yourself
Well, I can definitely do most of these, except call your parents often. My father passed away years ago and my Mom hasn’t spoken to us in years.
Especially in the world we live in today, this is so important. I try every day to be a better person, however, these Florida drivers make it hard lol.
These are fantastic. I think the most important one here is to stop making excuses. Humans are so good at excusing themselves, and that’s not how we grow.
I love all these points for being a good person. I realize that our character is shaped by so many factors including our life experiences.
I think the first one is the most important, the love and accept yourself! You can’t do anything else until you do that!
These are indeed great starters to get better. I always strive to become a better person by being mindful of others.
This is very accurate! I love the one that mentions “not wasting anybody’s time”. We really shouldn’t do that.
Great post! I think we should all try to be better people, some more than others. I especially agree with not taking things personally as often they aren’t meant personally. Especially in the workplace.
These are all good lessons to live by! Some are more difficult to uphold than others, but all are worth remembering.
These are all worthwhile points and doing as many of these as possible can make life better. Not just for you, but for those around you, too!
These are some great things to improve and be better person. These are things that I’m working at the moment on.
I think we could all learn from this! I do try to call/Facetime my parents quite a bit!
Those are some great points and totally agree with them. Being a better person makes things a lot easier for yourself.
Being a good human to yourself and others means you are and will be courageous in the face of danger and pain, rejection and despair. Great post!
