Why It’s Healthy And Important To Treat Yourself

Unlike a reward, which should be earned or justified, a “treat” is a small satisfaction or indulgence that we give to ourselves just because we want it. Thus, we don’t have to be good to get it nor we don’t earn or justify it.

When I advise my friends that ‘Hey! You gotta treat yourself sometimes’, for them, “treat” sounds like a shallow pleasure-seeking approach. As always, there is often guilt associated with it. But there shouldn’t be! Everyone deserves to feel pampered and special once in awhile. Treating yourself and doing something indulgent from time to time can play a very important role especially for your mental health as well as a host of other benefits. When we give ourselves treats, we feel energized, cared for and contented.

In this article, let’s explore the reasons why it is necessary and beneficial to treat yourself.

Sharing you one Secret of Adulthood:

“If I give more to myself, I can ask more from myself.

Self-regard is never selfish.”

Treating yourself can be anything from taking some time to watch a movie, going to the salon and getting a new haircut, doing exercise, getting a medical check-up or even buying a small gift for yourself – may it be something you can use everyday or something that you have been dreaming to buy for a very long time.

Regrettably, due to the nature of our busy, demanding lives nowadays especially during this difficult situation we’re in, taking care of one’s self has become an option or even a luxurious pursuit. We exert so much effort and push ourselves to the maximum by dedicating all of our time and energy to everything else but we forget to take care of our individuality, substantially leading to exhaustion.

The truth is, life is not going to give you any breaks. You will have to give it to yourself and revive so that you can continue pursuing your dreams and look after your loved ones while being mentally fulfilled and healthy overall.

Keep some “me-time” for yourself, then relax and enjoy. It will not make you selfish, it’s just simply necessary. Every little thing in this world needs nurturing to function properly, and we are only human beings, we absolutely need this.

“Love yourself first, and everything else falls in line. You really have to love yourself to get anything done in this world.”

Lucille Ball

Self-care reduces stress and promotes well-being.

Treating yourself can ultimately help in reducing your stress levels. Stress can negatively affect our bodies by causing sleep disorders inducing the risk of hypertension, compromise our immune systems and increase the risk of cardiac and inflammatory disorders. That’s why pampering yourself from time to time neutralizes your tension and boost your confidence leaving you an overall sense of well-being.

It will also boost your mood.

It doesn’t have to be luxurious grand gestures or costly pleasures, but instead small indulgences or treats can be just as effective in practicing self-care and to help yourself feel better. Remember that nobody wants to be a grumpy person, though everybody can be pettish at times, it is indeed important to treat yourself in some way to turn a frown upside down. The guilt you may feel when doing something good for yourself may vanish once you improve your mood and turn the day around.

Distress may lead to feelings of frustration.

One of the most important reasons why it’s important to treat oneself is because distress and deprivation is not a healthy way to form good habits. Self-care is very important when you are aiming to live a healthy and happy life. A life without comfort and pleasure will prompt feelings of resentment, frustration, and depletion. A self-reward or treat should be provided in order to build good routines and habits, as these will help you stay on track and be happy while doing it.

Pampering yourself leads to rejuvenation.

In a world of constant chaos, it is indeed difficult to avoid stressors, yet the easiest way to feel rejuvenated and refreshed it to indulge yourself! Doing something nice for yourself will reset the button and motivate you more to keep up with all the continuous hard work you are doing every day. It does not have to be costly and extravagant, just as simple as having a spa day or going out for a picnic at the beach can already be a reasonable yet efficient way to center yourself and to feel completely pampered.

“Sometimes you need to give yourself a break when you’ve had a lot of life change.”
