Everyday Finnish Vocabulary And Grammar: My Personal Reviewers

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Learning Finnish doesn’t always happen inside a classroom or from following one textbook from beginning to end.

Sometimes I learn a new word at work.

Sometimes I hear an expression during a conversation.

Sometimes I notice a grammar pattern that I keep forgetting.

And sometimes I simply realize that I need to make another reviewer because the same Finnish word has disappeared from my memory again. 😅

That is how many of these materials started.

These reviewers were originally made for myself because I needed a simpler way to remember what I was studying.

Some worked better than others. 😅 Some words stayed in my head, while others disappeared the moment I needed to use them in a conversation!

But they became an important part of my learning process.

If these materials can also help another Finnish learner, then I’m happy to share them. 💚

Learning Finnish Beyond the Classroom

As my Finnish improved, I realized that there was always something new to learn.

Even after studying grammar and completing different Finnish-language courses, I still came across words, expressions, and sentence structures that I wanted to understand better.

So I continued making my own notes.

Some of them focused on grammar.

Others were simply vocabulary lists or quick reminders.

Some were connected to everyday life, while others were things I encountered while studying, working, or talking with people in Finland.

I didn’t always create them in a perfect order.

Sometimes they were literally just random Finnish notes that eventually became useful reviewers. 😅

But that is also what learning a language looks like for me.

You learn something.

You forget it.

You review it.

You hear it again.

And eventually, it starts to feel familiar.

Why I Make My Own Finnish Reviewers

One thing I’ve learned about myself is that I remember things better when I can see them organized simply.

Long explanations can sometimes make Finnish grammar feel even more complicated.

So whenever possible, I try to turn what I’m learning into:

  • short notes
  • vocabulary lists
  • simple examples
  • visual reminders
  • sentence patterns
  • grammar summaries
  • words grouped by topic

Creating the reviewer itself also helps me study.

I have to read the topic again, organize the information, and think about how I can explain it in a simpler way that makes sense to me.

Then I can return to the reviewer whenever I forget something.

And yes…

I return to some of them many times. 😂

These Are My Personal Study Materials

Please remember that these reviewers were created from my own notes and personal learning process.

I am also still learning Finnish.

There may occasionally be:

  • mistakes
  • simplified explanations
  • expressions that can be said differently
  • examples that depend on context
  • notes that reflect the way I personally understood a topic at the time

These materials are intended to be supplementary learning resources.

They should not replace a qualified Finnish teacher, textbook, official language course, or other reliable Finnish-language resource.

If you are unsure about an important grammar rule or expression, I recommend checking it with a teacher or another reliable Finnish source.

I’ll continue adding more vocabulary, grammar, expressions, and other everyday Finnish reviewers as I organize my notes.
