Visiting Puijo Tower in Kuopio, Finland: Our Family Experience

Reading Time: 6 minutes

We had visited Kuopio several times since moving to Finland, but somehow, we had never made it to one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks – The Puijo Tower.

We had seen it from a distance before.

We knew it was there.

But for some reason, we never really had the chance to go up.

A Little About Puijo Tower

Puijo Tower is one of Kuopio’s most recognizable landmarks.

The current tower was completed in 1963 and stands 75 metres high. Because it is already located on top of Puijo Hill, the top of the tower rises about 224 metres above Lake Kallavesi and 306 metres above sea level.

What makes the tower especially worth visiting is the panoramic view.

From above, you can see the surrounding forests, lakes, islands, and the city of Kuopio.

Puijo Tower also has a panoramic café and a rotating restaurant. When the restaurant opened in 1963, it was the first rotating restaurant in Scandinavia. Today, the restaurant makes a full 360-degree rotation in about an hour.

But honestly, we didn’t need a fancy meal to enjoy the place.

A simple cup of coffee with that view was already enough for us.

Our First Visit in Summer 2025

Our first visit to Puijo Tower was during summer 2025.

The weather was warm, which made the whole experience feel relaxed and easy.

We finally went inside, took the elevator up, and saw the view we had been curious about for so long.

And yes…

It was beautiful.

From above, you could really appreciate how much water and forest surround Kuopio.

Living in Finland, we already see lakes and forests all the time.

But looking at the landscape from such a high viewpoint gives you a completely different perspective.

The lakes seemed endless.

Small islands were scattered across the water.

And everything looked so peaceful from above.

Coffee With a View

One of my favorite parts of our visit was simply sitting at the Tower Café.

We ordered coffee and spent some time enjoying the scenery through the large windows.

I think this was one of the nicest places we’ve ever had coffee.

Not because the coffee itself was anything unusual.

It was the view.

Sitting there with a warm drink while looking over Lake Kallavesi and the surrounding landscape made an ordinary coffee break feel special.

Our little one also had her own treat.

She enjoyed a doughnut while sitting with us and looking outside.

Even at her young age, she seemed to appreciate the view too.

Sometimes when traveling with children, you wonder how much they actually notice or remember.

But in the moment, seeing her enjoy something together with us was already enough.

Seeing Kuopio From Above

The viewing area gives a wide panorama over the Finnish Lakeland scenery.

That was probably the main reason the visit stayed with us.

You can drive through Kuopio many times and see the city from street level.

But once you go up the tower, you suddenly see how the city sits among all those lakes, islands, and forests.

It made me appreciate the Finnish landscape even more.

Sometimes you don’t need a full-day itinerary or several attractions.

One beautiful viewpoint can already make a trip worthwhile.

Returning in Spring 2026

We visited Puijo Tower again in spring 2026, this time with my parents.

They had come to visit us in Finland, so naturally, we wanted to bring them to some of the places we had enjoyed ourselves.

Puijo Tower was one of them.

But the experience felt very different from our summer visit.

There was still some snow around, although it had already started melting.

The temperature was much colder.

And once we reached the higher parts of the tower, the wind made it feel even colder.

It was definitely not the warm and relaxed summer atmosphere we had experienced the year before.

Still, the view was beautiful.

And most importantly, my parents enjoyed it.

Would We Visit Puijo Tower Again?

Yes.

We already visited twice, and I wouldn’t mind visiting again during another season.

I imagine the view would look completely different when everything is covered in snow.

That’s one of the nice things about traveling around Finland.

You can visit the same place in summer, autumn, winter, and spring, and somehow it feels like a different destination every time.

Puijo Tower may be a simple attraction compared with some of the bigger places we’ve visited, but it gave us something we always enjoy:

beautiful scenery,

quiet family time,

and another memory from our life in Finland.

Sometimes that is more than enough.

“Sometimes the best views remind us just how beautiful the journey has already been.”

“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.”

  • Psalm 19:1 (KJV)

Our visits to Puijo Tower were simple family trips, but looking over the lakes and forests from above reminded us once again how much beauty there is to discover in the country we now call home.
