He’s my nephew, so cute, isn’t he? He was 3 months old on this pic but now he’s 9 months! Time flies so fast.
How I started crocheting?
This pic was taken last June 2019 and he was actually playing with my first ever crochet product. I just started crocheting few months ago after I rediscovered this hobby from my colleague when we were telling each other stories about our highschool days and this T.L.E. (Technology and Livelihood Education) subject where we were taught how to do different skills such as knitting, tailoring and crocheting. Many thanks to my mother, she made my projects that time. Haha!
During “those” days, I wasn’t really into this hobby, I always ask my mother to finish my knitting and crocheting projects but now, really.. I love it! I mean, I love it and I enjoy it very much!
Why I love crochet?
Crocheting, first of all, gives me peace of mind. It makes me reflect about everything in life, what happened in the past and the lessons I have learned from it, my present problems and possible ways to solve it and what may happen in the future if I keep on doing such things.
It also keeps me busy during my time off. Rather than going to malls, shopping and spending money for unnecessary things, I prefer to stay at home to continue my projects and crocheting helps me save money as well since it reduces the time I’m outside home.
Most of all, crocheting helps me improve my creativity and passion on personalization where I can create patterns and designs based on my own preference. For now, I prefer to do medium to large patterns which I can use at home or at work every day such as coasters, pouch, hanging organizers, hanging fruit bag, pillow cover, scarf, cardigan and others. I will be posting my blogs for my previous projects to share my own way of doing it. I hope you’ll like it!
My First Project
It wasn’t clear to me at first what should I do as my first project. I researched patterns in Google and watched tutorials in Youtube. I even read blogs by other crocheters. Afterwards, I have decided to create a simple item which I can use every day, so I have concluded to make a small blanket for my nephew! I remembered, when I was planning to make it, I also considered that I was approaching my flight date going home as my annual leave from work abroad, so might as well give my nephew a present since it was my first time seeing him.
It was difficult for me to choose where to buy because here in Dubai, these tools aren’t cheap. So I found a yarn seller online named Craft Middle East (https://www.craftmiddleeast.com/) and I ordered my very first crochet tools such as:
- Soft Feather Crochet Cotton Yarn Multi Color S364C Color 58 (3 pieces) – AED 42 or USD 11
- Double Ended Metal Crochet Hook 5.00-6.00mm (1 piece) – AED 5 or USD 1.40
- Double Ended Metal Crochet Hook 7.00-8.00mm (1 piece) – AED 5 or USD 1.40

The site was having technical problems the time I was ordering so I emailed them and they were very helpful to me as they assisted me on placing the order and paid it cash upon delivery. I received it 3 days after ordering. I’m not yet an expert on identifying different types of yarn, I’m still working on it, but the yarns I received were in very good quality and it was totally worth it!
How I Made It?
Apologies as I do not have the exact number of stitches as I wasn’t blogging yet when I was making this project. However, I could share the pattern on how I ended up with this. First, I made chains (CH) according to my preferred length which makes up Row 1. Then, Row 2 will consist of double crochet (DC) stitches from start till end of the row. In Row 3, also consists of double crochet (DC) stitches in a pattern of – 3 DC in one CH below, skip 2 CH below, 3DC in one CH below, skip 2 CH below, and so on until the end of the row. Row 4 will be the easiest part, as we just have to make 3 DC on the space formed below on Row 3, and we just need to keep on repeating this pattern until desired width, or in my case, until the yarns are finished! Haha..
Baby Blanket Ended Up With Table Runner
I was planning to make a small blanket for my nephew, but due to my lack of resources, I ended up having a cute little table runner. Before finishing this, I even bought 3 more pieces of the same kind of yarn with green color just to continue this item and at least achieve a bigger piece. Below are the additional items I bought from Craft Middle East.
- Soft Feather Crochet Cotton Yarn Multi Color S364C Color 55 (3 pieces) – AED 42 or USD 11
- PRYM Wool Crochet Hook 6.0mm (1 piece) – AED 20 or USD 74
- Hariri Color 3430 (1 piece) – AED 6 or USD 1.50
- Nako Pirlanta Turquoise 107 (1 piece) – AED 10 or USD USD 2.50
- Light Crochet Hook 4.0 mm (1 piece) – AED 25 or USD 92

And now, I have been using this runner on my “plants’ table” as you can see in the picture. I love the color combination of green and blue as it matches my adorable succulent plants.

So there it is… sharing you my first ever crochet product!
