My nephew… He was only three months old when this photo was taken, but he is already nine months old now!

Time really flies so fast.

This photo was taken in June 2019, and he was actually playing with my very first crochet project.

And that’s how this little story begins…

How Did I Start Crocheting?

I started crocheting a few months before this photo was taken after I rediscovered an old hobby through a conversation with one of my colleagues.

We were talking about our high school days and remembered our T.L.E. (Technology and Livelihood Education) classes, where we were taught different practical skills such as knitting, sewing, and crocheting.

And then I remembered something funny.

Back then, I wasn’t really interested in these activities.

Whenever we had a knitting or crocheting project, I would ask my mother to finish it for me.

Thank you, Mom! 😂

But years later, I unexpectedly found myself falling in love with the very same hobby I used to avoid.

Funny how life works, right?

Now, I can honestly say:

I love crocheting!

And more importantly, I really enjoy it.

Why Do I Love Crochet?

Crocheting gives me something that I didn’t realize I needed:

peace of mind.

When I’m crocheting, I have time to slow down and think.

Sometimes, I reflect on the things that happened in the past and the lessons I learned from them. Other times, I think about the problems I’m currently facing and possible ways to deal with them.

And sometimes, I simply think about the future and where my decisions might lead me.

It’s almost like crocheting gives my mind a quiet space to breathe.

A Hobby That Keeps Me Busy

Crocheting also gives me something productive to do during my free time.

Instead of constantly going to the mall, shopping, or spending money on things I don’t really need, I often prefer staying at home and working on my crochet projects.

And honestly, it helps me save money too!

The less time I spend outside shopping, the less temptation I have to buy unnecessary things. 😂

It Brings Out My Creativity

Most of all, crocheting allows me to explore my creativity.

I enjoy choosing colors, experimenting with patterns, and creating things based on my own preferences.

For now, I prefer making medium- to large-sized projects that I can actually use at home or at work.

Some of the things I have made or planned to make include:

• Pouches
• Hanging organizers
• Hanging fruit bags
• Pillow covers
• Scarves
• Cardigans
• And many more!

I also plan to share some of my previous crochet projects here on the blog and hopefully show you how I made them.

I’m still learning, so don’t expect perfection! 😂

My First Crochet Project

When I decided to start crocheting, I wasn’t exactly sure what my first project should be.

So, like most beginners, I turned to the internet.

I searched for patterns on Google, watched countless tutorials on YouTube, and even read blogs written by experienced crocheters.

After looking at so many different projects, I decided to make something simple and useful.

And that’s when I thought:

Why not make a small blanket for my nephew?

It seemed like the perfect first project.

At that time, I was also getting ready for my annual leave from work abroad and was planning to go home.

Since it was going to be my first time meeting my nephew, I thought a handmade blanket would be a meaningful gift.

It wouldn’t just be something I bought from a store.

It would be something I made with my own hands.

Finding My First Crochet Supplies in Dubai

Finding crochet supplies in Dubai wasn’t as easy—or as cheap—as I expected.

After searching online, I found a yarn seller called Craft Middle East.

I ordered my very first crochet supplies from them:

• Soft Feather Crochet Cotton Yarn Multi Color S364C, Color 58 – 3 pieces
  AED 42 / approximately USD 11
• Double-Ended Metal Crochet Hook, 5.00–6.00 mm – 1 piece
  AED 5 / approximately USD 1.40
• Double-Ended Metal Crochet Hook, 7.00–8.00 mm – 1 piece

My Very First Crochet Materials

The website was experiencing some technical problems when I placed my order, so I emailed them for assistance.

Thankfully, they were very helpful and assisted me with completing my order. I was also able to pay cash on delivery.

I received my order just three days after placing it.

At that time, I was still learning how to identify different types of yarn, so I wouldn’t consider myself an expert.

But the yarn I received was good quality, and I felt that it was definitely worth what I paid for.

How I Made My First Crochet Blanket

Unfortunately, I don’t have the exact number of stitches I used because I wasn’t blogging yet when I made this project.

But I can still share the basic pattern and technique I used.

Row 1

I started by making a chain (CH) according to my preferred length. This became the foundation for Row 1.

Row 2

For the second row, I made double crochet (DC) stitches from beginning to end.

Row 3

This row followed a simple repeating pattern:

3 DC in one chain space, skip 2 chains, then 3 DC in the next chain space.

I continued repeating this pattern until I reached the end of the row.

Row 4 and Beyond

This was probably the easiest part.

I simply made 3 DC stitches into the spaces created in the previous row.

Then I repeated the same pattern over and over until I reached my desired size.

Or, in my case…

until I ran out of yarn! 😂

Baby Blanket Ended Up With Table Runner

I was planning to make a small blanket for my nephew, but due to my lack of resources, I ended up having a cute little table runner.

Before finishing this, I even bought 3 more pieces of the same kind of yarn with green color just to continue this item and at least achieve a bigger piece.

And now, I have been using this runner on my “plants’ table” as you can see in the picture. I love the color combination of green and blue as it matches my adorable succulent plants.

A Simple Project With a Special Meaning

Looking back, my first crochet project wasn’t perfect.

The stitches weren’t necessarily uniform, I didn’t have a proper written pattern, and I was still learning what I was doing.

But that’s what makes it special.

It was my first ever crochet project, and I made it for someone very special to me.

My little nephew was only three months old when this photo was taken, sitting there and playing with the blanket I had made.

Now, looking at this old photo, I can’t help but smile.

He has grown so much.

And somehow, this little crochet project became more than just a blanket.

It became a memory.

What Crocheting Taught Me

I never expected to fall in love with crocheting.

It was something I used to avoid in school.

Something my mother had to do for me.

And yet, years later, I rediscovered it and found something completely different in it.

Crocheting taught me that sometimes, we don’t appreciate something when we’re younger because we haven’t discovered its value yet.

It also reminded me that it’s never too late to learn something new.

You don’t have to be an expert when you begin.

You just have to start.

One stitch at a time.

One row at a time.

And eventually, you’ll look back and realize you’ve created something beautiful.

Every crochet project starts with a single stitch.

One stitch doesn’t look like much.

But when you continue adding one stitch after another, eventually, you have something you can hold in your hands.

Life can be like that too.

Sometimes we become discouraged because we don’t see immediate results. We want to finish everything quickly and wonder why our progress seems so slow.

But perhaps we’re not supposed to see the whole picture yet.

Maybe we’re simply being asked to take the next stitch.

My Reflection

My first crochet project reminded me that we don’t need to be perfect to create something meaningful.

I didn’t know much about crocheting when I started. I didn’t have a perfect pattern, and I certainly wasn’t an expert.

But I started anyway.

And that’s often how life works.

We may not have all the knowledge, all the resources, or all the confidence we think we need. But sometimes, God simply asks us to take that first step and trust Him with the rest.

Whether we’re learning a new hobby, starting a new job, moving to another country, pursuing a dream, or simply trying to become a better version of ourselves, we don’t have to have everything figured out from the beginning.

Start with what you have.

Learn as you go.

Be patient with yourself.

And keep going… one stitch at a time. 🧶❤️

Because someday, you might look back and realize that those little steps you almost didn’t notice were actually creating something beautiful all along.
