My First Pregnancy Journey: Feeling My Baby Move And Kick

Daily Short Blog #8

Being pregnant for the very first time was both terrifying and incredibly exciting. There were so many emotions, questions, and little moments that made the experience unforgettable.

My husband and I had been trying to have a baby for about six months after I stopped taking birth control pills. The wait felt much longer than we had expected. Every month brought a little hope, followed by disappointment when it wasn’t our time yet. So when we finally found out that we had conceived, it felt almost unreal.

We were going to have a baby!

It was crazy to think that there was already another little life growing inside me, becoming bigger and stronger every day. From that moment on, every appointment, every ultrasound, every symptom, and every little change in my body became part of our story.

I’m sharing my whole pregnancy journey here, which you can also read:

My First Pregnancy Journey

“A baby fills a place in your heart that you never knew was empty.”

The Second Ultrasound

It was 16th November 2021 when we had our second ultrasound.

By this time, our baby had grown so much, and my husband and I were both amazed when we saw the difference. We were actually a little shocked by how much the baby had developed in such a short period. Looking back, it also helped explain some of the uncomfortable symptoms I had been experiencing during the previous weeks.

During the ultrasound, we could see our baby moving on the monitor and, most importantly, hear the heartbeat.

That moment was truly unforgettable.

The baby looked so active, moving around as if there was a tiny party happening inside my womb. At one point, it even looked like the baby was doing little somersaults!

My husband and I couldn’t stop smiling.

It was such a strange but beautiful feeling to watch someone we hadn’t even met yet moving around so energetically.

Thankfully, the doctor told us that everything looked fine and there was nothing to worry about. The cramps and other symptoms I had been experiencing were considered normal for that stage of pregnancy.

I remember feeling relieved, happy, and emotional all at once.

My Baby’s First Little Kicks

This was also around my 12th week of pregnancy, or roughly my third month, and this was when I believed I felt my baby’s first little movements.

These early movements are often described as “flutters” or “quickening.”

The first time I felt that tiny flutter in my lower abdomen was exhilarating.

It felt a little like small bubbles popping inside my stomach, but somehow I knew it wasn’t gas. I couldn’t really explain how I knew the difference, but as a first-time mother, I had this overwhelming feeling that I was feeling my baby move.

It was such a tiny sensation.

But emotionally, it felt huge.

I remember thinking, “Was that really my baby?”

And then I felt it again.

That was the moment everything suddenly became much more real.

I wasn’t just looking at an ultrasound image anymore. I could actually feel this tiny person growing inside me.

“Motherhood: The only place you can experience heaven and hell at the same time.”

What Do the First Baby Movements Feel Like?

Every pregnancy is different, and the first movements can feel different from one mother to another.

Some women describe them as:

  • Gentle flutters
  • Tiny bubbles
  • A light tickle
  • A little flick
  • A soft tap
  • A gentle thud
  • A tumbling sensation
  • A painless little “zap”

At first, the movements may be so subtle that you might even wonder whether you imagined them.

As the pregnancy progresses and the baby grows stronger, those tiny flutters usually become more noticeable and recognizable as movements.

That was one of the things I looked forward to the most—being able to tell when my baby was awake, moving, and enjoying all that space inside my tummy.

What Is Quickening?

Quickening is the term commonly used for the first time a pregnant woman feels her baby move.

According to the NHS, you may begin to feel your baby moving between 16 and 24 weeks of pregnancy. With a first pregnancy, some women may not notice movement until after 20 weeks. (NHS)

Because I thought I felt my baby’s first movements around 12 weeks, it may have been something else or very subtle early movement. Looking back, I would describe it as what I personally believed were my baby’s first flutters rather than a definite clinical milestone.

That distinction is important because pregnancy experiences vary so much.

Sometimes we feel something and immediately wonder whether it’s the baby, digestion, muscle movement, or something else entirely.

And that’s okay.

The exciting part is that, as pregnancy progresses, the baby’s movements become easier to recognize.

From Tiny Flutters to Stronger Kicks

One of the most beautiful things about pregnancy is watching these tiny movements evolve.

At first, there were only occasional little sensations that made me stop and wonder.

Later, those tiny flutters became more obvious.

Eventually, I imagined that there would be stronger kicks, little stretches, rolls, and movements that would make me smile every time I felt them.

It was amazing to think that every kick was coming from the same little baby we had first seen as a tiny image on an ultrasound monitor.

Each new movement felt like another little connection between us.

Even before meeting my baby, I was already learning how to recognize her presence.

A New Kind of Bond

Pregnancy changed many things for me, but feeling my baby move created a connection that felt completely different.

Before pregnancy, motherhood was something I could only imagine.

After hearing the heartbeat, seeing the baby move, and eventually feeling those little flutters, motherhood started becoming something I could actually experience.

It made me more aware of everything I was doing.

What I ate.

How much I rested.

How I moved.

How I looked after myself.

There was suddenly another little person to think about.

And although that responsibility could sometimes feel frightening, it was also incredibly beautiful.

I was already someone’s mother.

The Little Moments That Stay With You

Pregnancy isn’t always easy.

There can be discomfort, fatigue, cramps, nausea, anxiety, sleepless nights, and countless questions.

Sometimes you wonder whether everything you’re experiencing is normal.

Sometimes you worry about the baby.

Sometimes you simply want to feel reassured that everything is going well.

But then you feel a tiny movement.

And suddenly, you smile.

That tiny flutter can make you forget your worries for a moment.

It becomes a little reminder that there’s a beautiful journey happening inside you.

“You are pregnant and you are powerful. You are bold and you are beautiful. Go forward in your boldness, in your beauty and in your contentedness. Trust your body to birth and know that the collective power of women worldwide will be with you.”

“A baby fills a place in your heart that you never knew was empty.”

“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.”
— Psalm 139:13

Final Thoughts

Feeling my baby move and kick for the first time was one of those moments that is almost impossible to describe with words.

It was such a small movement, yet it made everything feel suddenly real.

There was a tiny life growing inside me, and I could finally feel a little sign that my baby was there.

Every little flutter became a precious reminder that motherhood had already begun.

Even before I could hold my baby in my arms, I was already learning what it meant to love, protect, and cherish someone with my whole heart.

Pregnancy may come with fears, discomfort, and countless questions, but these little movements make so many of those difficult moments feel worthwhile.

Every kick feels like a tiny hello from my little one, a beautiful reminder that I am not alone.

And perhaps that’s what makes pregnancy so extraordinary.

You spend months waiting to meet your baby, while slowly falling in love with someone you’ve never even seen face-to-face.

Sometimes, the smallest kicks leave the biggest footprints on a mother’s heart. ❤️
