Today, May 1st, is my birthday, hello to all my fellow Tauruses! ♉🥰
Instead of simply celebrating another year, I decided to pause for a moment and look back at the lessons life has taught me so far.
Growing older isn’t just about adding another number to your age. It’s about everything you’ve experienced along the way: the successes, failures, disappointments, friendships, conflicts, changes, mistakes, blessings, and unexpected turns.
Everyday life has a funny way of teaching us lessons. Sometimes we learn them through happy experiences. Sometimes we learn them the hard way.
And sometimes, we only understand the lesson years later.
So, in honor of another year of life, here are 12 life lessons I’ve learned so far—and still continue to work on every single day.
1. Taking Care of Your Health Is Extremely Important
I probably should have learned this lesson much earlier.
Back in college and even during my younger years, I was so focused on academics, work, and other responsibilities that I didn’t always pay enough attention to my own health.
As we grow older, however, we begin to realize that our bodies don’t always cooperate the way they used to. 😅
That’s why taking care of yourself should become a long-term goal rather than something you do only when you get sick.
Eating nutritious food, exercising regularly, staying hydrated, sleeping properly, managing stress, and simply being aware of what your body needs can make a huge difference.
But I’m not going to pretend that I’m perfect.
I still eat junk food.
I still enjoy sweets.
I still love carbohydrates.
And yes, sometimes I indulge a little too much.
Balance is the key.
Healthy living doesn’t have to mean being perfect. It means making better choices more often and building habits that you can actually maintain.

2. You Will Be Criticized No Matter What You Do—So Do Your Thing
One thing I’ve definitely learned is that you can’t please everyone.
No matter what you do, someone will have something to say.
Do something good? Someone may criticize your motives.
Make a mistake? Someone will point it out.
Stay quiet? Someone may call you arrogant.
Speak up? Someone may call you difficult.
At one point in my life, I listened too much to negative criticism. I allowed other people’s opinions to affect how I saw myself.
If I had continued doing that, I would have become a prisoner of other people’s expectations.
Constructive criticism can help us grow, and we should be humble enough to listen when someone genuinely wants to help us.
But not every opinion deserves a permanent place in our minds.
You are still the person responsible for your own life.
So keep your head up.
Learn what you need to learn.
Ignore what you need to ignore.
And most importantly:
Be yourself.

3. Small Ideas Can Grow Into Something Big
I’ve learned not to become overwhelmed by trying to do everything at once.
Sometimes, we think too big.
We want the perfect career, the perfect business, the perfect body, the perfect finances, the perfect house, and the perfect life—all at the same time.
Then we become overwhelmed and end up doing nothing.
Instead, start small.
Think of your goal as an upside-down triangle.
Begin with one small point.
Then slowly build outward.
I experienced this with blogging.
I wanted to improve my writing and English skills while sharing information about health, wellness, travel, and life.
So I started with one small idea:
Start a blog.
From there, I learned about writing, editing, photography, SEO, WordPress, social media, website management, and countless other things I never expected to learn.
And I’m still learning.
That’s the beauty of starting small.
You don’t have to know everything before you begin.
You just have to begin.
“A person who chases two rabbits at the same time catches neither.”
Focus on one thing.
Build it.
Improve it.
Then expand.
4. You Cannot Change Other People
This was one of the hardest lessons for me.
I’ve tried to control situations at work, with friends, in relationships, and even within my family.
I’ve wished people would behave differently.
I’ve wished they would understand my point of view.
I’ve wished they would apologize.
I’ve wished they would simply act the way I thought they should.
And eventually, I realized:
I can’t control other people’s behavior.
I can communicate.
I can explain.
I can set boundaries.
I can choose how I respond.
But I cannot control another person’s decisions.
People are shaped by their own experiences, beliefs, fears, personalities, and circumstances—many of which we may never fully understand.
So sometimes, the healthiest thing you can say is:
“It is what it is.”
Let people be who they are.
And let yourself be who you are, too.
5. Never Judge a Book by Its Cover
People often think they know everything about someone based on what they see online or hear from other people.
But social media shows only a tiny fraction of a person’s life.
What you see may be the happy picture.
The vacation.
The celebration.
The smiling family photo.
The promotion.
The beautiful meal.
But you don’t see the sleepless nights.
The financial struggles.
The arguments.
The disappointments.
The losses.
The private battles.
I’ve experienced plenty of bumps in the road too—many of which most people never saw.
And that’s okay.
We don’t owe everyone an explanation of our struggles.
So before judging someone based on a photo, a social-media post, or somebody else’s story about them, remember:
You don’t know the whole story.
“Don’t judge a book by its cover.”
And no, Judge Judy doesn’t count. 😉😂
6. Being Kind Will Get You Further Than Being a Jerk
Let’s be honest.
We’ve all had bad days.
We’ve all been grumpy.
We’ve all said things we later regretted.
And yes, I have my moments too.
Sometimes I’m impatient.
Sometimes I’m irritated.
Sometimes I react before thinking.
But I’ve learned that being unnecessarily rude doesn’t make life better.
Usually, it just leaves guilt behind.
When you’re angry, give yourself some space.
Take a breath.
Walk away for a moment.
Calm down before responding.
And if you’ve made a mistake, apologize.
There’s no shame in saying:
“I’m sorry. I was wrong.”
Be kind.
Be gracious.
Be humble.
You don’t lose anything by treating people well.

7. Panicking and Overthinking Rarely Solve the Problem
I have a tendency to overthink.
When something goes wrong, my mind immediately starts creating ten different scenarios.
What if this happens?
What if that happens?
What if everything goes wrong?
And suddenly, I’m worrying about problems that haven’t even happened.
Overthinking can make a small problem feel enormous.
I’ve learned that when something goes wrong, it’s better to pause and ask:
What can I actually do about this?
If there is a solution, work on it.
If there isn’t, accept what you cannot change and move forward.
Life will continue moving whether you’re panicking about it or not.
So take a breath.
Refocus.
And keep going.
8. No One Is Going to Build Your Life for You
One of my favorite quotes is:
“When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”
— Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist
I love the message behind it—but I also believe we have to do our part.
The universe isn’t going to magically create your dream life while you sit on the couch waiting.
If you want to become a teacher, study.
If you want to start a business, begin.
If you want to improve your relationship, work on it.
If you want better finances, learn how to manage your money.
If you want to travel, start planning and saving.
Dreams require action.
Opportunities are like fruit on a tree.
They won’t simply fall into your hands.
Sometimes, you have to reach for them.
Sometimes, you have to climb.
And sometimes, you might fall.
But you get back up.
9. Life Isn’t Always Fair—So Focus on What You Can Control
I used to spend a lot of time thinking about whether something was fair or unfair.
Why did this happen to me?
Why did they get that opportunity?
Why did someone else succeed?
Why didn’t things happen the way I wanted?
But eventually, I realized that constantly comparing my life with other people’s lives doesn’t help me move forward.
Life isn’t always fair.
Sometimes good things happen to people who don’t seem to deserve them.
Sometimes hardworking people struggle.
Sometimes plans fail.
Sometimes unexpected blessings appear.
We can’t control all of that.
What we can control is what we do next.
So:
Stay in your own lane.
Focus on your life.
Work toward your goals.
And stop measuring your progress against someone else’s timeline.
10. Don’t Blame Others for Everything—And Don’t Give Up
Problems happen.
Failures happen.
Mistakes happen.
That’s part of life.
When something goes wrong, it’s tempting to look for someone to blame.
But blame doesn’t solve a problem.
Instead, ask:
What happened?
What could I have done differently?
What can I do now?
Take responsibility for the things that are within your control.
Learn from mistakes.
Find a solution.
Try again.
And most importantly:
Don’t give up.
Failure is not the end of your story.
Sometimes it’s simply information telling you:
“This approach didn’t work. Try another one.”
There is almost always a lesson hiding inside a difficult experience.

11. Save, Invest, Then Travel
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become much more aware of the importance of financial stability.
We work hard to pay our bills, support our families, manage our responsibilities, and hopefully build something for the future.
I’m not a financial expert, but I personally like the idea behind the 50/30/20 budgeting guideline: approximately 50% for needs, 30% for wants, and 20% for savings or financial goals.
Of course, everyone’s financial situation is different, so this is only a guideline—not a rule that works perfectly for everyone.
I’ve learned that even small amounts can add up over time.
You don’t have to start with thousands.
Start with what you can realistically afford.
Save.
Build an emergency fund.
Invest carefully after understanding the risks.
And once your finances allow it…
Travel.
Traveling isn’t simply about spending money.
It’s also an opportunity to learn about other cultures, meet different people, step outside your comfort zone, and create memories that stay with you.
Some of our budget-friendly travels include:
A 4-Day Maldives Trip on a Budget
How To Make a 10-Hour Layover at Hong Kong Memorable
Singapore Layover: How To Make Your Short Visit Worth It
And yes, I still have a very looooong way to go before I can honestly say I’m 100% financially stable. 😂
But I’m working on it.
12. Always Be Grateful
And finally…
Be grateful.
This is probably one of the lessons I keep reminding myself of the most.
Sometimes we’re so focused on what we still want that we forget to appreciate what we already have.
We’re chasing a better job.
A bigger house.
More money.
A better relationship.
A healthier body.
A new destination.
A bigger dream.
And while there’s nothing wrong with wanting more, we shouldn’t become so focused on tomorrow that we forget to appreciate today.
Gratitude doesn’t mean pretending everything is perfect.
It simply means recognizing the good that already exists in your life.
Be grateful for the people who love you.
Be grateful for your health.
Be grateful for another morning.
Be grateful for the lessons you’ve learned.
Be grateful for the difficult experiences that made you stronger.
Be grateful for the little things.
I wrote more about this here:
What Am I Still Learning?
Honestly?
All of it.
These aren’t lessons I’ve mastered.
They’re lessons I’m still practicing.
I still overthink.
I still eat unhealthy food.
I still get irritated.
I still worry.
I still make mistakes.
I still struggle with finances sometimes.
I still have days when I don’t feel motivated.
And I think that’s okay.
Life lessons aren’t a test that you pass once and never have to take again.
You keep learning them.
Over and over.
Sometimes the same lesson comes back in a different situation just to make sure you’ve really learned it. 😂
A Birthday Reflection
So, here’s to another year.
Another year of experiences.
Another year of learning.
Another year of mistakes.
Another year of growth.
Another year of becoming a little wiser, hopefully a little kinder, and definitely a little more grateful.
I’ve realized that getting older isn’t something we should fear.
It’s an opportunity.
A chance to know ourselves better.
A chance to let go of things that no longer serve us.
A chance to appreciate the people who have stayed.
A chance to dream again.
A chance to start over.
And perhaps most importantly, a chance to become the person we want to be.

“And now that you don’t have to be perfect, you can be good.”
— John Steinbeck
“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”
— Psalm 90:12
Birthdays are funny.
When you’re young, you count down the days because you can’t wait to get older.
Then you grow up and suddenly you’re wondering:
“Wait… how did I get here so quickly?” 😂
But maybe getting older isn’t really about losing youth.
Maybe it’s about gaining perspective.
At 29, I don’t know everything.
I probably never will.
But I know more than I did five years ago.
I’ve learned that health matters.
Peace matters.
Family matters.
Kindness matters.
Financial stability matters.
Experiences matter.
And gratitude matters.
I’ve learned that not everyone deserves access to my energy.
I’ve learned that failure doesn’t mean I’m finished.
I’ve learned that I don’t have to explain myself to everyone.
I’ve learned that some things simply need to be accepted.
And I’ve learned that the life I once prayed for may already be happening right in front of me—I just need to slow down enough to notice it.
So today, I’m not only celebrating another birthday.
I’m celebrating another year of becoming.
Still learning.
Still growing.
Still making mistakes.
Still dreaming.
Still trying.
And, above all, still grateful.
Thank you to everyone who has remembered my birthday and taken the time to send a message, call, greet me, or simply think of me today. ❤️
You have made this birthday even more special.
Here’s to another year of life, love, lessons, adventures, and hopefully many more memories to come.
Cheers to 29! 🥂🎂❤️

Happy birthday! I love that you’ve quoted Paulo Coelho’s on this post (I’m a fan). And I believe in all these specially number 8 (no one is going to do anything for you). We shouldn’t depend on anyone when it comes to deciding or actually doing things. Though, asking for help is okay. Thanks for the insightful post!
Definitely Polly, it is indeed right to seek others for help, be open minded and open for suggestions. Thank you for the greetings! Also, I’m happy to hear another Coelho fan, he’s such a fascinating author. Which books of him have you read?
You’re welcome and I hope your day went well! I have 16 of his books but my favorite is tie between Veronika Decides to Die and Eleven Minutes!
It was a blast, though we just stayed at home. I’m happy that my family, friends, colleagues, relatives and other people I know are all safe from Covid. Hope you and your family too! Anyhow, I’ve read those books too and they’re totally awesome and relatable. Thanks for sharing!
Love this! Especially number two. I try to teach my kids that all the time

Thank you Ana! It’s really great to read Coelho’s books, really leaves a lot of valuable life lessons every time you finish it. By the way, would you mind to share the books you’ve read? I’m looking for another book actually.

Thank you so much Widny! Sharing valuable information and lessons is made my day more special.
These are really great advice! My favorite: “You are going to get criticized no matter what you do, so just do your thing.” As long as you don’t hurt anyone, be free!
Absolutely Iris!! We can do anything we want as long as we don’t hurt anyone. Thank you for quoting!
Happy birthday to you! And nice advice too! The one that spoke to me the most was “You are going to get criticized no matter what you do, so just do your thing.” because that is something I need right now.
Definitely Aisasami! Thank you for the greetings and compliments. Hope this article helps too.
Happy Belated Birthday! I agree with every point that you made. Continue growing and sharing. I will take the believing in the small things that will lead to the big things with me. Thanks for posting!
Thank you Chyna for the greetings and compliments! Hope it helps with your life goals. Good luck!
Great advice about being yourself and not worrying about what others think. I also like the idea of small ideas turning into big ones. Creativity is like that – if you feed your ideas they grow into something huge and wonderful!
Absolutely Shelley! Everything you’ve said is true. In addition, sometimes we just don;t notice that we are being creative already. We just need to give significance to it and utilize it more.
These are really great life lessons. Happy birthday! Birthdays are the best for reflection.
Thank you for the greetings Katrina! It is indeed a great time to reflect our life happenings.
This is such a great advice that can actually save your day Happy Birthday godbless!
Thank you Maysz! Hope some advice could help.
Happy Birthday and enjoy your special day. As we grow each year, we learned many valuable lessons that we carry in our pockets as we walk in life.
Thank you for the greetings Blair! You are absolutely true, as we move on in our life, we tend to encounter several challenges and lessons accompany them. We are just lucky to learn from it.
Oh, I got really hit hard by that chasing two rabbits will catch neither! I remembered when my mentor said that sometimes, you have to choose between your service and your passion. Now it gets me thinking again 😅
It is indeed a significant life quote GV! We can relate to it no matter what.Hope this article helps, and good luck hope you achieve positively!
I agree with all of these statements. Once I got to a certain age I just said Eff it to everything and everyone that wasn’t contributing to my life in a positive way. Once you start living your life for yourself, great things happen.
You are absolutely right Michele! Just do your own thing and don’t mind what other people will say, may it be negative or positive, don’t let them affect your life goals. As long as you’re not hurting someone, go ahead and keep yourself up!
I LOVED this article! Lately I have been trying to keep a positive mentality for reaching my goals and all of these truths spoke to me!
Thank you Jen! Glad to be sharing helpful life lessons. Hope these could help.It is always important to be optimistic at all times.
Happy birthday. Wish you all the best……
This is really a great to read. As we grow and grow older, we learned many valuable things in life. Cherish every moment and do your things.

Thank you Billy. You are absolutely right!
