There is something special about baking for someone you love.
It was Rev’s birthday on August 12, and I wanted to make something homemade for him. Since chocolate cake is one of his favorites, I decided to try baking one from scratch.
The funny thing is, this was actually my first time baking a cake! 😄
I’ve made other things in the kitchen before, but baking a cake felt a little different. There are measurements to follow, baking times to consider, and, of course, that little bit of nervousness wondering whether the cake will actually rise and taste good.
Still, I wanted to give it a try.
The recipe below was originally a recipe for a simple vanilla cake. I adapted it by adding cocoa powder and melted dark chocolate to turn it into a chocolate cake. I also made my own chocolate buttercream frosting to finish it.
Was it perfect?
Not quite.
Was it delicious?
According to my husband and our little one, yes! ❤️
So, I’m sharing my first chocolate cake recipe here. Perhaps it can also inspire another beginner baker to give homemade cake a try.
My First Chocolate Cake Recipe
Ingredients
For the Chocolate Cake
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup water
- 6 tablespoons cooking oil
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Melted dark chocolate, as desired
For the Chocolate Buttercream Frosting
- ½ cup melted butter
- ½ cup melted chocolate
- 2 cups confectioners’ sugar or powdered sugar
- 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons milk
Optional Toppings
- Chocolate sprinkles
- Food coloring, if you want to decorate the frosting
How to Make the Chocolate Cake
1. Prepare the dry ingredients
First, place the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar in a large mixing bowl.
Sift the ingredients together. This helps remove lumps from the cocoa powder and flour and makes it easier to create a smooth cake batter.
I personally like sifting dry ingredients when baking because it makes the mixture lighter and easier to combine.
2. Prepare the wet ingredients
In a separate bowl, combine the water, cooking oil, lemon juice, vanilla extract, and melted dark chocolate.
Mix everything well until the ingredients are combined.
The melted chocolate gives the cake an extra chocolate flavor, while the cocoa powder provides the richer chocolate base.
3. Combine the wet and dry ingredients
Slowly add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients.
Mix until everything is well combined and the batter becomes smooth.
You don’t need to mix it excessively. Just make sure there are no large lumps of flour remaining.
This was one of the moments when I started wondering whether my cake was actually going to work. 😂
But I just followed the recipe and trusted the process.
4. Prepare the baking pan and oven
Preheat your oven to 175°C for approximately 15 minutes.
While the oven is heating, prepare your baking pan.
Grease the pan with a little butter or cooking oil and lightly dust it with flour. You can also use baking paper if that’s more convenient for you.
Pour the cake batter into the prepared pan and spread it evenly.
5. Bake the cake
Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for approximately 30 minutes.
The exact baking time may vary depending on your oven and the size of your baking pan, so it’s always a good idea to check the cake near the end of the baking time.
To check if it’s ready, insert a toothpick into the center of the cake.
If the toothpick comes out clean or with just a few moist crumbs, the cake should be ready.
Remove it from the oven and allow it to cool completely before adding the frosting.
I allowed mine to cool at room temperature for around 30 minutes, then placed it in the refrigerator for about 1–2 hours.

How to Make the Chocolate Buttercream Frosting
Now comes the fun part!
1. Combine the frosting ingredients
In a mixing bowl, combine:
- Melted butter
- Melted chocolate
- Confectioners’ sugar
- Vanilla extract
- Milk
Mix everything thoroughly until the frosting becomes smooth and creamy.
If the frosting feels too thick, you can add a small amount of milk. If it becomes too thin, add a little more powdered sugar.
2. Frost the cake
Once the cake has completely cooled, spread the chocolate buttercream over the top.
You can also cover the sides if you want a fully frosted cake.
Don’t worry about making it look perfect.
I certainly didn’t!
Since this was my first cake, I was simply happy to see the frosting stay on the cake without creating too much of a mess. 😂
3. Add your favorite toppings
For my cake, I decided to keep the decoration simple.
I added chocolate sprinkles on top.
You can also decorate it with chocolate shavings, chopped nuts, fresh berries, or anything else you enjoy.
And that’s it!
My first homemade chocolate cake was finally finished.

The Final Judgement
Yes, “judgement”.. as if we’re in a competition. 😂😂😂
Now for the most important question:
Did my husband like it?
Thankfully, yes!
Rev enjoyed the cake and even said that it tasted similar to the Chocolate Mousse Cake from Starbucks, which is something we often order whenever we have coffee there.
Hearing that made me incredibly happy because I honestly wasn’t expecting my first attempt to turn out that well.
Our little one loved it too, which made the birthday celebration even more special.
As for me, I thought the cake was a little too sweet.
Next time, I would probably reduce the amount of sugar, especially in the frosting. I think a slightly less sweet buttercream would balance the chocolate flavor better.
But honestly, I’m not going to be too hard on myself.
It was my first time baking a cake!
And for a first attempt, I’m pretty happy with the result. 😊

What I Learned From My First Cake
Even though this was only one cake, I learned a few things from the experience.
Don’t be afraid to try
I could have simply bought a cake from a bakery.
But then I wouldn’t have had the experience of making one myself.
Trying something new can feel intimidating, especially when you don’t know whether the result will be good. But sometimes, you simply have to start.
Don’t expect perfection
My cake wasn’t perfect.
The frosting wasn’t professionally decorated, the sweetness wasn’t exactly where I wanted it to be, and I’m sure I could improve the appearance next time.
But that’s the whole point of learning.
Your first attempt doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to be a beginning.
Taste and adjust
Since I found the frosting too sweet, I already know what I want to change next time.
Maybe I’ll reduce the confectioners’ sugar, use more dark chocolate, or experiment with a different frosting altogether.
That’s one of the fun things about cooking and baking, you can make the recipe your own.
Why Homemade Cakes Feel Different
A homemade cake isn’t necessarily better than a professionally made cake.
But it can be more meaningful.
When you bake something for someone you love, you’re giving them more than food. You’re giving them your time, effort, attention, and a little piece of yourself.
I think that’s why this cake felt special to me.
It wasn’t perfect, but I made it for my husband on his birthday.
And when I saw him enjoying it, I knew that all the measuring, mixing, waiting, and worrying had been worth it.
Final Thoughts
My first chocolate cake was certainly a learning experience.
I started with a little uncertainty and ended with a cake that my husband and our little one genuinely enjoyed.
Would I make it again?
Definitely!
Next time, I’ll adjust the sweetness, improve the decoration, and probably experiment with a few more chocolate flavors.
And who knows? Maybe someday I’ll look back at this first cake and laugh at how nervous I was.
For now, though, I’m simply happy that I tried.
“The secret ingredient is always love.”
“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus.”
— Colossians 3:17
This cake reminded me that we don’t have to be experts to create something meaningful.
Sometimes, we just need a little courage to try.
Whether it’s baking, cooking, crocheting, traveling, or learning something completely new, the first attempt may not be perfect—and that’s okay.
The important thing is that you started.
And when something you made brings happiness to the people you love, that’s already a beautiful success.
So here’s to more cakes, more experiments, more learning, and hopefully, fewer overly sweet frostings next time! 😂🍫🎂
Happy baking, and remember… sharing is caring! ❤️

Thank you, Lord.. for all Your blessings.
