There is something special about spending a night outdoors with the people you love.

You leave the busy city behind, put away your phones for a while, prepare some food, sit around with friends, and simply enjoy the fresh air and open space.

That was exactly what we wanted when my husband, our friends, and I decided to spend a night camping at Expo 2020 Lake in Al Qudra, Dubai.

At the time of our visit in December 2021, the lake had become a popular destination for residents and visitors looking for a peaceful place to enjoy the outdoors. The lake itself is man-made, and its shape was designed to resemble the Expo 2020 logo, making it particularly interesting to see from above.

For us, however, the best part wasn’t simply the lake.

It was the experience of spending quality time together.

What Is Expo 2020 Lake?

Expo 2020 Lake is a man-made lake located in the Al Qudra area of Dubai.

One of its most interesting features is its unique shape, which resembles the Expo 2020 logo when viewed from above.

The surrounding desert landscape also gives the area a very different atmosphere from the busy city center.

Instead of skyscrapers, traffic, and crowded streets, you get open desert, cool evening air, and plenty of space to sit around and enjoy nature.

How to Get to Expo 2020 Lake

During our visit, getting there wasn’t particularly difficult.

From the heart of Dubai, it took us approximately 1½ hours to reach the area, although travel time will naturally depend on your starting point and traffic conditions.

The route is generally straightforward, but the last part involves a rough and sandy road, so drivers should be prepared for the change in terrain.

We spent roughly 10–20 minutes driving through the sandy section before reaching the lake.

Unlike camping destinations up in the mountains, you don’t have to deal with steep and winding roads.

Still, make sure your vehicle is suitable for the conditions and drive carefully.

For navigation, it’s best to check an up-to-date map before leaving because desert routes and access points can change.

Is the Entrance Free?

During our visit, there was no entrance fee.

However, whether you’re visiting a public outdoor area, desert campsite, or lake, one rule should always remain the same:

Take your rubbish with you.

The beauty of places like this depends on everyone doing their part.

Don’t leave plastic bottles, food containers, charcoal, disposable plates, or other rubbish behind.

Enjoy the place, but leave it clean for the next group of visitors.

Are There Washroom Facilities?

During our visit, there were toilet facilities available.

However, because the area becomes particularly busy during weekends, holidays, and peak camping periods, queues can become long.

Personally, I prefer bringing a portable camping toilet when we’re staying overnight in places like this.

It gives us a little more convenience and privacy, especially when camping with friends or family.

If you’re bringing your own portable toilet, make sure you use it responsibly and dispose of all waste properly. Don’t dig random holes or leave human waste in the camping area.

And, of course, if proper public facilities are available, using them is always preferable.

Our Overnight Camping at Expo 2020 Lake

It was the UAE’s 50th National Day holiday when my husband, our friends, and I decided to spend the night at Expo 2020 Lake for the first time.

On December 1, 2021, we met up at the location and prepared ourselves for an overnight camping adventure.

By the time we arrived, it was already around 4 in the afternoon.

And wow!

There were already many visitors and campers around the lake.

We could see colorful tents scattered around the area, with families and groups of friends preparing their campsites for the evening.

The Weather Was Perfect for Camping

The weather was one of the best parts of our trip.

It was cool and breezy without being unbearably cold.

December is generally one of the more comfortable times of the year to spend time outdoors in the UAE, especially compared with the intense summer heat.

For someone like me who enjoys cool weather, it was absolutely perfect.

There was enough breeze to keep us comfortable, but it wasn’t so cold that we were constantly shivering.

Camping With Friends and Family

Our group included approximately four families, so it was a pretty lively gathering.

We prepared plenty of food for the evening.

We grilled:

• Fish
• Chicken
• Pork
• Sausages

We also prepared a delicious beef soup, which we cooked using a portable stove powered by butane.

There was something really enjoyable about preparing food outdoors.

The smell of barbecue was everywhere, everyone was chatting, and the children were running around and playing.

Some of the adults in our group also enjoyed a small amount of alcohol while listening to music and relaxing.

Most importantly, everyone was simply enjoying each other’s company.

The Evening by the Lake

As the evening continued, the campsite became even livelier.

The cool weather made it comfortable to sit outside, talk, eat, and laugh together.

This is actually one of the reasons we enjoy camping so much.

You don’t need an elaborate itinerary.

Sometimes, all you need is:

good food + good friends + a beautiful place.

And, of course, a little music doesn’t hurt. 😊

Our Night at the Campsite

Our evening continued until around 1:00 in the morning.

Eventually, everyone started getting tired and heading to their tents.

We didn’t get as much sleep as we hoped, though.

There were several groups around us playing music late into the night, so the area remained noisy until the early morning.

But honestly, we had expected that.

It was a public holiday, and the area was packed with campers.

So, if you’re planning an overnight stay at a popular camping destination during a holiday, be prepared for the possibility of noise.

It’s part of the experience.

Still, we’d definitely prefer a quieter night next time. 😄

Good Morning, Expo 2020 Lake!

We started waking up at around 6:00 in the morning.

And even though we didn’t get much sleep, waking up to the cool morning breeze made it worthwhile.

The sun was beginning to rise, the surroundings were quieting down, and the lake looked completely different compared with the evening before.

We took a little time to walk around and appreciate the scenery.

Some visitors were already awake.

Others were packing up their tents and preparing to leave.

Walking Around the Lake

One of the simplest things we enjoyed was simply walking around.

We took pictures, looked at the lake, enjoyed the breeze, and watched the fish.

We also waved at other campers and exchanged a few friendly smiles.

And of course, I couldn’t resist joking about the campers who had kept everyone awake with their music the previous night. 😂

But kidding aside, the morning was peaceful and beautiful.

It reminded me why we enjoy getting away from the city from time to time.

Camping Is About More Than Sleeping Outdoors

One thing I’ve learned from camping is that one night is never really enough.

You spend the day preparing.

You set up the tent.

You prepare the food.

You sit around talking.

You watch the sunset.

You look at the stars.

You wake up early.

Then suddenly, it’s already time to pack everything and go home.

But that’s okay.

Because what matters most isn’t how long you stayed.

It’s how you spent the time.

The conversations.

The laughter.

The stories.

The food.

The unexpected moments.

And the memories you created with the people who were there.

What We Learned From Our Camping Trip

Our overnight camping experience at Expo 2020 Lake reminded us of a few simple things:

During holidays and weekends, popular camping areas can become extremely crowded.

Coming earlier gives you more options when choosing your campsite.

3. Prepare enough food and water.
Bring everything you’ll need because desert locations may have limited nearby facilities.

4. Bring appropriate camping equipment.
A good tent, sleeping bags, chairs, lighting, cooking equipment, and other essentials can make a big difference.

5. Prepare for noise.
If you camp during holidays or busy weekends, don’t expect complete silence.

6. Keep the area clean.
Bring rubbish bags and take everything with you when you leave.

7. Respect other campers.
Everyone has come to enjoy the outdoors. Keep music and conversations at a reasonable volume, especially late at night.

8. Check the weather before going.
December weather can be beautiful, but conditions can still change.

9. Enjoy the simple things.
You don’t need a complicated itinerary. Sometimes, just sitting with friends beside a lake is enough.

The Takeaway

Our overnight stay at Expo 2020 Lake wasn’t luxurious.

There was no comfortable hotel bed.

No hot shower.

No room service.

And definitely no guaranteed quiet night. 😂

But there was something we don’t always get when we’re busy with work and everyday responsibilities:

time.

Time to talk.

Time to laugh.

Time to eat together.

Time to watch the sunset.

Time to appreciate nature.

Time to simply be present.

And that, for me, is what camping is really about.

Looking back at our first overnight camping experience at Expo 2020 Lake, I’m grateful that we decided to go.

The location was beautiful, the weather was comfortable, the food was delicious, and most importantly, we were surrounded by good friends.

We may not remember every single thing we did that night.

But I know we’ll remember how it felt.

That feeling of sitting outdoors after a long day, looking at the lake, laughing with friends, and realizing that sometimes the simplest experiences become the best memories.
