Visiting Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi, Finland: Our Winter Experience in Lapland

Reading Time: 9 minutes

There are some places that look beautiful in pictures, but feel completely different once you finally see them in person.

For us, Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi, Finnish Lapland, was one of those places.

Our first visit was in December 2024, when a friend from the Middle East came to visit us in Finland.

Since it was already December, we thought there could hardly be a better place to bring a visitor than somewhere filled with snow, Christmas lights, reindeer, and of course, Santa Claus himself.

It was also our first time visiting Santa Claus Village.

And honestly?

It felt magical.

The weather was cold, the ground was covered in snow, Christmas decorations were everywhere, and you could really feel the Christmas atmosphere.

Then in December 2025, we went back for the second time, this time with friends who live here in Finland.

Apparently, one visit was not enough for us.

Here are some of the things we experienced during our two winter visits.

A Little About Santa Claus Village

Santa Claus Village is located in Rovaniemi, Finnish Lapland, right on the Arctic Circle.

Rovaniemi is promoted as the Official Hometown of Santa Claus, and Santa Claus Village is open throughout the year, not only during Christmas. Visitors can meet Santa Claus and cross the Arctic Circle every day of the year.

Of course, December has a completely different atmosphere.

Snow covers the village.

Christmas lights brighten the dark winter days.

People arrive from different parts of the world.

And suddenly everything looks like something from a Christmas movie.

That was exactly how it felt during our first visit.

1. Santa Claus House

As they say, Santa Claus lives in Rovaniemi.

So naturally, when you’re already there…

Why not visit Santa Claus?

One of the main places we stopped for pictures was Santa Claus House.

Visitors can meet Santa at Santa Claus Village throughout the year, and entrance to meet him is currently free, although professional photos and other extras have separate charges.

Even if you don’t meet Santa personally, simply walking around the buildings and taking pictures already gives you that Christmas feeling.

Naturally, we took plenty of photos.

When you’re in Santa Claus Village in December, it’s almost impossible not to.

2. Mrs. Santa Claus’ Christmas Cottage

We also stopped by Mrs. Santa Claus’ Christmas Cottage.

The cottage is located in the Santa Claus Reindeer area and is another part of the Christmas Village experience. Visitors can meet Mrs. Santa Claus there during its operating season, while the café area can also be visited separately.

We mostly enjoyed walking around and taking photos of the different Christmas-themed buildings.

Everywhere you looked, there seemed to be another nice place for a picture.

It was cold, but the snow made everything look even more beautiful.

3. Crossing the Arctic Circle

One of the most interesting parts of Santa Claus Village is that the Arctic Circle passes directly through the area.

There is a marked Arctic Circle line where visitors can stand, take pictures, and say that they have officially crossed into the Arctic.

Santa Claus Village itself is located at approximately 66°32′ north, right around the Arctic Circle.

Of course, this became another photo stop for us.

Living in Finland has already brought us much farther north than we ever imagined when we were still living in the Philippines and Dubai.

Standing at the Arctic Circle made that thought feel even more real.

4. Sending Postcards From Santa Claus’ Main Post Office

One experience I really liked was visiting Santa Claus’ Main Post Office.

Instead of simply buying postcards as souvenirs, we actually sent some from Rovaniemi to our loved ones back home and to friends living in other parts of Europe.

Mail sent from the Main Post Office receives a special Arctic Circle postmark. There is even a special red post box for cards that visitors want to be held and delivered closer to Christmas.

I thought that was such a nice little experience.

Receiving a postcard is already special nowadays because most of our communication happens online.

But receiving one sent all the way from Santa Claus Village in Lapland?

That makes it a little more memorable.

5. Reindeer Rides at Santa Claus Village

When we returned in December 2025, we explored a little more of the village.

This time, we came across the area where visitors can experience reindeer rides.

Traditional reindeer rides are offered during winter at Santa Claus Village, with different experiences depending on the season and operating conditions.

These were the prices for the Forest and Reindeer Path Rides in December 2025. If you’re planning to ride the reindeer sleigh, keep in mind that prices may have changed since then.

We didn’t actually take a ride during this visit, but it was interesting seeing the area and checking the available options.

Maybe next time we visit, this will finally be one of the activities we try.

That seems to be becoming a common phrase in our travels:

Maybe next time.

But leaving a few things undone gives us another reason to return.

6. Santa’s Pets

During our second visit, we also noticed Santa’s Pets.

This is another family attraction inside Santa Claus Village where visitors can see animals such as reindeer, alpacas, goats, sheep, rabbits, donkeys, and birds.

Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough time to go inside.

There were already so many things happening around the village, and December can be especially busy.

So once again…

Maybe next time.

7. Arctic Circle Husky Park

There is also a Husky Park directly in Santa Claus Village.

The park is home to Siberian Huskies, and depending on the season and weather, visitors can meet the dogs and join husky activities or sled rides.

We didn’t manage to experience this one either.

But this is definitely something I would like to consider on another winter trip.

Seeing huskies in Lapland feels like one of those classic northern Finland experiences.

December Is Definitely a Busy Time

During both visits, especially in December, there were plenty of tourists.

Families.

Couples.

Tour groups.

Children excited about Santa Claus.

And travelers simply wanting to experience Christmas in Lapland.

The official Santa Claus Village information also notes that waiting times to meet Santa can vary depending on visitor numbers, especially during the busy Christmas period.

But for us, the crowds didn’t take away from the experience.

December is probably when many people dream of visiting Santa Claus Village.

And I understand why.

The snow and Christmas atmosphere really make the place feel special.

Passing by Arctic SnowHotel

During our trip, we also passed by Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos.

It is located in Sinettä, around 26 kilometres or roughly a 30-minute drive from Rovaniemi city centre and Santa Claus Village.

We didn’t go inside because visiting the SnowHotel required an entrance ticket, and we had already spent quite a lot of time exploring other places.

So we decided to leave that experience for another trip.

The SnowHotel itself is rebuilt from snow and ice for each winter season, which already sounds interesting enough to make me curious.

Another addition to our growing:

Things to do next time list.

A Beautiful Winter Sunset in Santa Claus Village

One of my favorite photos from the trip was taken as the day was ending.

Winter days in Lapland are short, especially in December.

The light changes quickly, and the sky can become beautiful even in the middle of what feels like afternoon.

Seeing the Christmas Village under the winter sky made a perfect ending to our visit.

Would We Visit Santa Claus Village Again?

Considering we already visited twice…

I think the answer is obvious.

Yes.

There are still activities we haven’t tried.

We haven’t done the reindeer ride.

We haven’t visited Santa’s Pets.

We haven’t experienced Husky Park.

And we still haven’t gone inside Arctic SnowHotel.

So technically, we already have enough reasons for another trip.

Santa Claus Village may be touristy, especially around Christmas, but it is still one of those places that feels special during a snowy Lapland winter.

For families, especially those visiting Finland for the first time, I can understand why it remains such a popular destination.

Visiting the Arctic Circle was definitely one for the family album.

More From Our Journey to Finland

Being able to visit places like Rovaniemi still sometimes makes me think about how our family ended up here.

Finland was never originally part of our plans.

But slowly, it became our home – and now we’re discovering more of it one trip at a time.

Important Note

This post is based on our personal visits in December 2024 and December 2025.

Opening hours, activity prices, entrance fees, reindeer and husky rides, animal experiences, SnowHotel schedules, and other services can change from season to season. Always check the official websites before planning your visit.

“Christmas becomes even more special when it gives us time to create memories with the people we love.”

“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.”

  • Luke 2:11 (KJV)

Our visits to Santa Claus Village gave us snowy days, Christmas memories, time with friends, and another beautiful experience from our life in Finland. Even after visiting twice, there is still more waiting for us the next time we return.
