Some places become memorable not because we planned a big adventure there, but simply because of how peaceful they made us feel.
Since moving to Kuhmo, our family has slowly discovered many quiet corners surrounded by forests, lakes, rivers, and beautiful Finnish nature. Sometimes we find them while looking for somewhere new to explore, while other times we simply want a peaceful place where we can spend an afternoon together.
One of the things I love about living in a smaller town is that nature never feels too far away. We can pack a few snacks, bring something to drink, get into the car, and before long find ourselves somewhere completely different from our everyday surroundings.
One of the places we discovered is Lentiira River, or Lentiiranjoki in Finnish.
It may not be the kind of place filled with tourist attractions or crowds, but perhaps that is exactly what made our visit special.
A Little About Lentiira River
Lentiiranjoki is part of the beautiful waterways around Lentiira in Kuhmo. According to Visit Kuhmo, the Lentiira River route stretches for approximately 20 kilometers between Käntinsalmi and Rannantie and is particularly suited to exploring the waterways by kayak and for fishing. The riverbanks are partly sandy, and there are also rest facilities along the longer route, including a lean-to shelter and a wilderness hut.
The river is home to fish species including perch, pike, zander, and trout, making the area popular for those who enjoy fishing. Of course, anyone planning to fish should always check the current Finnish fishing regulations and permit requirements beforehand.
But you certainly don’t have to be interested in fishing to appreciate Lentiiranjoki.
For us, it was simply somewhere beautiful to spend time together.
Our Visit to Lentiiranjoki in June 2026
It was June 2026 when we visited Lentiira River while my parents were staying with us here in Kuhmo.
The weather that afternoon was lovely. The air was cool but not uncomfortably cold, the kind of Finnish summer weather that makes you want to stay outside a little longer.
It was perfect for a simple afternoon together.
We drove from Kuhmo and eventually arrived at the area we wanted to explore. There was a parking area with enough space for several cars, but when we arrived, we were the only ones there.
And I think that made the experience even better.
Just Us, the River, and the Sounds of Nature
The first thing I noticed was the quietness.
There was no traffic, no crowd, and hardly any other noise around us.
We could hear the wind moving through the trees, the gentle sounds of the water nearby, and, of course, our daughters’ laughter.
Sometimes, those are the moments I appreciate the most.
Nothing extraordinary needs to happen. You don’t need an expensive activity or a carefully planned itinerary. Sometimes, being somewhere peaceful with the people you love is already enough.
It felt like we had the whole place to ourselves.
A Little Cottage by the Water
On one side of the area, we noticed a cottage-like building.
It was closed when we visited, so we didn’t go inside. From what we could see through the window, there appeared to be an indoor grilling or gathering area where groups could spend time together.
A Beautiful Place for Family Photos
Of course, when you have beautiful Finnish nature surrounding you, taking pictures becomes almost unavoidable!
The river, trees, sky, and quiet surroundings gave us such a lovely background for family photos.
And because my parents were visiting Finland, these pictures became even more meaningful to me.
Someday, when we look back at them, we probably won’t remember every small detail of that afternoon.
But we will remember that we were there together.
For me, that’s one of the reasons I love documenting these little family adventures on my blog. Places change, seasons pass, our children grow, and life keeps moving. Photographs and stories give us something to return to.
The Sandy Shore and Boats
On another side of the area was a sandy shoreline, and we also saw boats resting near the water.
This actually fits the character of Lentiiranjoki quite well. Visit Kuhmo notes that sections of the riverbank are sandy and lists boat-launching points at both Käntinsalmi and Rannantie along the approximately 20-kilometer river route.
The sandy shore made the place feel even more inviting.
The water looked tempting enough for swimming, especially during summer, although for us it still felt a little too cold!
Maybe that’s because we’re still carrying a little bit of our Filipino definition of “warm water” with us. 😄
We were perfectly happy staying on the shore, enjoying the scenery and watching the water instead.
A Place That Doesn’t Need Much
One thing I liked about Lentiiranjoki was its simplicity.
There wasn’t a long list of attractions waiting for us. There weren’t shops everywhere, noisy entertainment, or crowds of people.
There was simply nature.
And sometimes, that’s precisely what we need.
A river.
A sandy shore.
Trees surrounding us.
Cool Finnish air.
And enough space for our family to slow down for a while.
Living in Finland has made me appreciate this kind of simplicity more and more. There are days when sitting somewhere peaceful and listening to the water can feel just as refreshing as going on a big holiday.

The entire Lentiira River route offers much more than what we experienced during our short family visit.
For those looking for a longer outdoor adventure, Visit Kuhmo describes it as a roughly 20-kilometer route from Käntinsalmi to Rannantie, with opportunities for kayaking and fishing. The route is not classified as accessible, so visitors planning to explore more of it should consider the terrain and their own abilities beforehand.
The surrounding Lentiira area also offers accommodation and other nature activities, making it possible to spend more than just an afternoon in this part of Kuhmo.
For our family, though, a simple afternoon visit was already enough to make us want to return.
Final Thoughts
Our afternoon at Lentiira River (Lentiiranjoki) was simple, peaceful, and exactly the kind of family moment I love.
There was no complicated itinerary.
We arrived, explored the surroundings, admired the river, took pictures, listened to the sounds of nature, and enjoyed being together.
Having my parents there made the visit even more special. They had travelled all the way from the Philippines to spend time with us in Finland, and being able to show them another peaceful corner of Kuhmo was something I was grateful for.
Living far from the country where I grew up has taught me that home can take on different meanings. The Philippines will always be home, but little by little, Kuhmo has also become a place filled with our family’s memories.
Lentiiranjoki is now part of those memories.
And hopefully, this wasn’t our last visit.
There are still many parts of the river and the surrounding Lentiira area that we haven’t explored. Perhaps next time we’ll bring our coffee, pack some food, stay a little longer, and discover something new.
Because sometimes the best family adventures don’t have to be grand.
They just have to be together.

There is something about quiet water that reminds us to slow down.
Life can easily become filled with schedules, responsibilities, work, studies, and things that need to be done. But afternoons like this remind me that we also need moments when there is nowhere else we need to be.
Sometimes all we need is fresh air, peaceful surroundings, and the people we love beside us.
And maybe that is one of nature’s simplest gifts, to remind us to be present while the moment is still ours. ❤️
