Visiting Ranua Wildlife Park in Finland: Our Family Experience

Reading Time: 6 minutes

Sometimes the best travel stops are the ones that happen along the way.

During summer 2025, after our long road trip to Nordkapp, Norway, we were finally making our way back home to Finland.

But before completely ending the trip, we decided to make one more family stop.

This time, at Ranua Wildlife Park in Ranua, Finland.

We were traveling together with our family and friends, and since Ranua was along our journey home, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to visit.

The kids were excited.

And honestly, the adults were curious too.

We had visited zoos before, especially back in the Philippines, but Ranua felt quite different from what we were used to.

Instead of feeling like a traditional city zoo, the park was surrounded by northern forest, with plenty of space between the animal areas.

It turned out to be a relaxing and enjoyable stop before continuing our long drive home.

One of our favorite stops during our long road trip back home.

A Little About Ranua Wildlife Park

Ranua Wildlife Park opened in 1983 and specializes in Arctic and northern animal species.

According to Ranua Resort, the park is home to around 50 different species and approximately 150 individual animals. The enclosures are located within the northern forest and are designed to resemble the animals’ natural environments as much as possible.

The walking route around the park is approximately 2.8 kilometres long, so visiting the whole area involves a fair amount of walking.

Most of the route follows wooden walkways, and during snow-free seasons, it is also suitable for families using strollers.

That was definitely helpful for families like us traveling with small children.

Our Entrance Through ePassi

One good thing about our visit was that we did not have to pay for the entrance ourselves.

At the time, we had an employee benefit available through ePassi, funded by our employer, which we were able to use for our visit.

So our entrance was already covered.

That made the spontaneous stop even better.

Walking Around the Wildlife Park

The first thing I noticed was how spacious the park felt.

The animal enclosures were spread throughout the forest instead of being placed very close together.

It also wasn’t overly crowded when we visited.

There were other families around, but compared with some of the busy zoos we had experienced in the Philippines, the atmosphere felt much quieter.

That made walking around more relaxing.

From what we observed during our visit, the animals appeared to have plenty of space and areas where they could move around or stay out of view.

The park itself also explains that its enclosures include hiding spaces, allowing the animals to choose whether they want to rest away from visitors or stay visible.

Seeing Animals for the First Time

One of the most exciting parts for us was seeing animals we had never encountered before in person.

There were several Arctic and northern species throughout the park.

Ranua Wildlife Park is home to animals including polar bears, brown bears, wolves, lynxes, wolverines, Arctic foxes, reindeer, moose, otters, and several kinds of birds.

For us, seeing the bear and the moose was especially memorable.

Coming from the Philippines and spending many years living in the Middle East, these were not animals we normally had opportunities to see.

So naturally, we stopped and watched.

Sometimes you forget how exciting something simple can be when you’re seeing it for the first time.

The kids were fascinated, but I think we adults enjoyed it just as much.

A Nice Stop During Our Long Road Trip

What made our Ranua visit even more memorable was that it wasn’t really the main destination of our vacation.

Our bigger adventure had been our long road trip from Finland to Nordkapp, Norway.

Ranua became one of those extra experiences we added while traveling back home.

And sometimes those unplanned or smaller stops become part of the best travel memories.

After spending so many hours inside the car, being able to walk through the forest and stretch our legs was also very welcome.

It broke up the journey nicely before we continued driving home.

We really enjoyed how spacious and peaceful the wildlife park felt.

A Family-Friendly Place to Visit

Based on our experience, I think Ranua Wildlife Park is a nice option for families traveling around northern Finland.

You should be prepared to walk, though.

With the route being almost three kilometres, comfortable shoes are definitely helpful.

If you’re traveling with smaller children, bringing a stroller can also make the visit easier.

There are also places along the route where visitors can stop and eat their own snacks, including barbecue shelters.

The park is open throughout the year, so the experience can also look completely different depending on the season.

Summer gives you greener forest surroundings and easier walking conditions, while winter would offer a very different Arctic atmosphere.

For us, summer worked perfectly.

Would We Visit Ranua Wildlife Park Again?

Yes, especially if we were already traveling in the area.

It was peaceful, spacious, family-friendly, and gave us the opportunity to see northern animals we don’t usually encounter.

The kids enjoyed themselves.

We adults enjoyed ourselves too.

And after a very long Norway road trip, it was a nice final activity before heading back home.

More From Our Journey to Finland

Trips like this have slowly become part of our life since moving to Finland.

Before we could start exploring places like Ranua, Kuopio, Helsinki, Norway, and Sweden, there was first the much bigger journey that brought us here.

“Sometimes the best memories are made during the unexpected stops along the journey.”

“O LORD, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches.”

  • Psalm 104:24 (KJV)

Our visit to Ranua was only a short stop on the way home, but it gave us another simple family memory from our travels in Finland. Sometimes those little detours are exactly what make a road trip more memorable.
