There were a lot of reasons. Finnish is VERY new to me. I didn’t think of it even when I was young, living in the Philippines, or even when I was living in Dubai, that oh! I will be studying Finnish in the future. I didnt have any background about this language I didnt even know the language exist in the first plae. As i have mentione don my first few blogs, Finland was not our original plan. Me and my husband were planning to move to other countries like Australia, Canada, US, UK or New Zealand. BUt hen faith brought us to other destination. Hence, Finland. Learning a different lnaguge that you have not planned in the first place, was difficult. Finnish alphabet have a lot of difference than English or Tagalog. Though the Alphabet was almost the same, they have different vowels. They have the y, ö, ä. Which are pronounced differently. and this deserve a different blog. Finnish grammar works very differently. Instead of relying heavily on prepositions such as in, from, to, Finnish often changes the ending of the word itself. One word can suddenly appear in many different forms. There are many grammatical cases. For someone used to Tagalog and English, forms such as talossa, talosta, taloon can initially feel like three completely different words even though they all come from talo. Words change depending on the sentence. It is not always enough to memorize the dictionary form because nouns, adjectives, pronouns, and verbs can change endings. Consonant gradation can be confusing. Letters inside words can change when the word is inflected, so even a word you already memorized may suddenly look different. Spoken Finnish and written Finnish can sound very different. You may study minä olen and then hear mä oon. You learn sinä olet and hear sä oot. That can feel like learning another version of Finnish after arriving in Finland. 😅 Long and short sounds matter. Finnish distinguishes words through single and double vowels or consonants. To Filipino ears, hearing the difference at normal speaking speed can take practice. Some Finnish sounds are unfamiliar. Sounds such as y, ö, and ä can take time to pronounce naturally if they are not part of the languages you normally use. Finnish words can become very long. Compound words and added endings can make a familiar root look intimidating. Listening is harder than reading at first. In a textbook, you have time to analyze the sentence. In real conversation, Finnish comes quickly, words blend together, and there is no pause button. 😂 Translating in your head slows you down. At first, you may hear Finnish, translate it into English or Tagalog, think of your answer, translate the answer back into Finnish, and only then try to speak. By that time, the conversation has already moved on. Fear of making mistakes can make speaking harder. You may actually know the words but freeze because you’re worried about grammar, pronunciation, or using the wrong ending. You don’t always have a direct equivalent in Tagalog or English. Some Finnish structures need to be understood as Finnish rather than translated word-for-word. Now readers already know how you started, so we can talk about the struggle. Things like: Minä olen.Minulla on.Minulle.Minulta.Minussa.Minusta. And you thinking: Why does “minä” have so many relatives?! 😂 We can talk about: casesword endingslong wordsno direct English equivalentsspoken Finnish vs written Finnishremembering vocabularysentence construction But keep it your experience, not a Finnish grammar textbook. Show tables or notes that demonstrate the things you struggled with. For me, the hardest part wasn’t simply memorizing Finnish words. It was learning how those words kept changing depending on what I wanted to say. I could memorize one word today, then see it tomorrow with a completely different ending and wonder if I had ever learned it at all. 😂 Growing up with Tagalog and English helped me become comfortable switching between languages, but Finnish was a completely different challenge. It wasn’t only new vocabulary. I had to train my ears, my tongue, and even the way I formed sentences. - [How I Started Learning Finnish While Working Full-Time in Dubai](https://pinoyupnorth.com/how-i-started-learning-finnish-while-working-in-dubai/): When I started learning Finnish in 2023, I wasn't sitting inside a classroom in Finland. - [Learning Finnish: The Beginning of My Language Journey](https://pinoyupnorth.com/learning-finnish-the-beginning-of-my-language-journey/): Before Finland became our home, Finnish first became a language I had to learn. In 2023, I barely knew anything about the Finnish language. A year later, I was living in a small town in Finland where suddenly the words I had been memorizing through a computer screen were all around me. And that’s when I realized something: Passing a Finnish-language assessment and actually living in Finnish are two very different things. 😅 Why learning Finnish became necessary for your Finland opportunity English, is not a main language of use in Finland. Unlike in Dubai, though a lot of workers were immigrants from all over the world, everyone needed to speak in English. It is a mandatory for each person. In official places and documents, there will be English and its translation in Arabic, for those old locals who are not able to understand English. Our job in Finland as hoiva avustaja in healthcare field, requires us to learn the Finnish language because we will be conversing to the elderlies mostly. And most of the elderlies, does not speak English. The healthcare software system used in the healthcare setting, used in documenting medical reports, progress of patients, lab test results, communication with doctors, prescriptions, all are also written in Finnish. Not 100% of our colleagues also could speak in English, which is understandable, because all their life they live in their home country, so what is the need of understanding English? In our day to day lives, going to the grocery, asking for which items are where, ordering food in a restaurant, it is easier for the Finnish staff to understand what you are looking for. So yes, these factors are the main reason why we really need to learn the FInnish language. Though some locals can speak English, it is still a MUST for us Filipino workers to be able to understand the FInnish Language. Your first reaction to the Finnish language Honestly? I felt like a baby trying to learn o speak for the very first time. I grew up in the Philippines speaking Tagalog. My mother was from the south, they speak Tagalog too. My Father was from the north, they speak Ilocano, a dialect I never learned to speak, because it was too difficult too! I worked in the UAE for almost 10 years, I have never learned Arabic. Few words I was able to speak. I worked with people from diffirent races, Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Nepalese, Thais, Arabs, but never I’ve spoken theiir languages. Few words I’ve learned though. Speaking Finnish and learning a NEW language for me was indeed a HUGE challenge. Starting your online course with NLRC through Silkkitie in Dubai in 2023 July 2023 when I atended the orientation by my hiring agency, Silkkitie shortly after accepting to proceed with the journey, I received access the an online learning course. Though there was still second thoughts and hesitstion, not knowing the future will be, I was also excited to learn something new. this is always me, excited to learn something new. just like the years before meeting and saying Hi to the Finnish language, i also loved learning something new. just like when I learned how to crochet, how to play the piano and how to bake. I just look at it, like learnjng another hobby, something new that will make my life colorful, away from those boredom of everyday life. Studying while still working full-time Sitting in an office as my everyday job made it easier for me study thr Finnish language. Meaning, i have a looot of time. aside from the time I spent inside ny car, while driving, listening to Finnish music. ithough at home, i didnt get nuch time beacuse we also need to take care of our daughter, who was more than 1 year old at that time. when i want to learn something new, i always make time for it. Moodle lessons, Discord, oral tests and assessments all our online lessons were peovided free of charge by Silkkitie. The course was handled by NLRC as well as unit assessments, where being passed or failed can be determined. conversations and groupings were held and organized through the Discord application. it was very convenient. Scheduling the tassessments were also announced by the NLRC teachers through the discord app. Assessments are done like a conversation between a teacher and a student. Somtimes the teacher pretends to be a customer and the student will be the service staff in a restaurant. Sometimes the setting will be in a grocery store, in a flower shop, in a library, or in just a normal encounter in a walk outside. assessments are done also to give lectures and help the students feel like its a real finnish conversation sometimes the assessments were done by teacher and a pair of students whereun the students will talk to each other while teacher observes. It was truly a nice encounter and very educative. Your funny memories of escaping to your car during work just to take an online test 😅 And because i cannot preselect the schedules of assessments in advance, i cannotavoid having the assessments during my work timings. So if it happens, i will have to do the assessments inside my car during work breaks. inside the car, it was quiet. I have peace. I can focus. Soemtimes i do memorizations inside the car alone. Spekaing to myself helped me improve and adapt to the finnish language. sometimes i say to my car, thank you for being there by being quiet and just listening to me, my mistakes and wrong grammar. Passing assessments and continuing through recruitment it was truly important to pass each assessment in order to move forward Luckily and fortunately i passed all the assessments in time. I believe there was around 25 – 30 units, in which each unit will be assessed. passing the assessments in time, made my process with Silkkitie, i cannot say faster, but straightforward. sometimes only prayer is what was needed in order to pass those assessments. Everytine i have one, i got sweaty and nervoise, but once i passed, im truly grateful. Arriving in Finland and suddenly realizing that classroom Finnish and real-life Finnish are very different 😂 Continuing Finnish classes after arriving Learning through work, daycare conversations, grocery shopping, colleagues, neighbors, etc. Realizing that Finnish learning didn’t stop after recruitment Where you are now – still learning and improving A short introduction to the mini-series that will follow This is only the beginning of my Finnish-language story. Before you know it, they’ve grown up so fast and all you have are memories. All happens in the blink of an eye. So as much as possible, we cherish every moment like it’s the most special one. One of the best things about being a parent today is being able to capture and document all of our baby’s milestones. It is indeed a fun way to track our baby’s growth and development. Writing down numbers inside a baby book can be boring and tedious, but taking milestone photos does the job and makes it more enjoyable! Nowadays, we are no longer limited to the use of film cameras and paid photographers. Now, there are several ways of taking pictures, it’s even easier now to DIY or do it on your own way! I’m happy to share with you my lovely daughter’s monthly milestones and hope you get inspired by these creations. Some dress are personally crocheted by me making it more personal and admirable. So take time to freeze these fleeting memories, the year will pass and your future self will be thanking you for this. During our baby’s first year of life, we will witness their many ‘firsts‘ – their first smile, their first meal, their first work, their first step… There will be no other chance to do this! Time goes by so fast, and before you know it, your child no longer fits in the crook of your arm. So take advantage of the moment that you have now! When the nights are long and the tears are streaming, still baby you are the best!
